Decent but not perfect

Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2008
I've lived here for two years and have enjoyed it for the most part. I live in one of the garden apartments and can confirm that the walls are extremely thin. When my neighbor closes or opens his door, it sounds like my door is being opened or closed. If he has a conversation in the hallway, the sound somehow travels into my bedroom where I can hear, clearly, everything he says. The big toilet WHOOSH that someone else wrote about is absolutely true. That was a shocker my first few nights living here. It's something I've become used to, however.
In my bedroom the window faces the entry of both mine, my neighbor's, and the gate to enter the garden area. The noise is extremely frustrating at times. Thankfully, I have great neighbors and I will miss that element. Maintenance is decent. Although, I had requests for repairs I made a couple times within the first two months of living here and I never, ever, had anyone fix or follow up with me. I neglected to follow up with it after so long so I can't say it wouldn't be fixed if I made a request now.
The staff is actually very good. They are very pleasant to deal with and they do try to be very helpful whenever you are in need of something. They do a brunch every first Saturday of the month so you can mingle with the staff as well as members of the community. This helps to get to know everyone on a friendly basis.
The parking is usually good but sometimes things get a little tight. I've been forced to park my car on the curb occasionally but that has never been a real issue for me.
One thing that is great about this place is that there is a good sense of community. Most of the residents gather around the pool on the weekends and we all just hang out and have a good time. There is usually no big deal about sharing pool items like inner-tubes and such. And sometimes you can even get a burger or hot-dog from a neighbor who is grilling.
One thing I can say is that I'm not sure I've seen pest control in my apartment for over a year. I worked from home for 9 months in 2008 and spent much of every day in my apartment. Not once did I see pest control come in. This would be off-putting more if I had a pest issue, but that has never really been a problem.
The complex upkeep is good. It had declined a bit around my 12-month mark, but they have brought the place back into shape. They have garbage valet in the garden apartments so it is very convenient to get rid of my refuse.
About the murder that occurred at the complex. I'm not sure if it was a murder or a suicide, but someone did die in an apartment. It was in the high-rise building on the 5th or 6th floor. I remember the ambulance and police coming here at that time but I never heard more details about it. I can not confirm if there was or wasn't ever a conclusion to that.
I am generally pleased with my apartment. The only thing I wish I had that I don't is a patio, but otherwise I'm reasonably satisfied. I'm moving out at the end of this lease because they have tried to raise my rent to almost $1,300 a month for my 1 bedroom apartment. I'm not entirely opposed to paying that much, but this apartment is not worth that asking price.
Also, the surrounding area is not very developed. You will have to travel about 15 minutes in any direction to do any decent shopping. Obviously there are grocery stores and small places nearby, but nothing like a Walmart or Target. This is a great place for people who work in Downtown Fort Lauderdale because it is a breeze to take the back-roads into the business district.
