Not worth the money

I am a current resident in a one-bedroom apt. who hasn't live here long, yet I am already sick of this place. The hallways smell funny and the carpet/wallpaper is putrid. It reminds me of a nursing home or a cheap motel in Key West. The elevators smell disgusting like a mix of beer, cigarette smoke, vommit, and a men's locker room, and there is no ventilation. I dread having to come home everyday and inhale that scent. There is nothing appealing about the interior or exterior of the building. The property is surrounding by noisy expressways and train tracks, and it is extremely dangerous getting in and out of the community onto Marina Mile. You can only make a right and have to cut across 3 lanes of traffic in order to make a u-turn or else wind up on Florida's Turnpike. Coming home is equally as dangerous since people do 50-60 mph over that bridge and ride up on your tail as you're making the turn. Every day I take my life into my hands entering and exiting the community.
The individual unit looked decent upon first glance, but it had a funny smell. They told me it was the new carpet, but its been months and the smell hasn't gone away. Isn't new carpet supposed to smell good' They neglected to clean the unit thoroughly prior to move-in, and that is being generous. There were cat droppings in the cracks and crevices, and on top of the laundry machines. They never disclosed to me that the prior resident had cats. The kitchen is disproportionately small compared to the rest of the unit and did not include a microwave. The design of the unit is highly unorthodox. The bathroom has no door to separate the shower from the bedroom so when you shower it steams up the whole place. But the toilet area has 2 doors which makes no logical sense. Whoever designed this place was on crack while drawing the blueprints. The fixtures are falling apart and the window shades needed to be replaced 5 years ago.
The location is awful. It is a pain to get in and out of the community each day. There is literally NOTHING close or convenient in terms of shopping. The only shopping plaza within a 5-mile radius has a run-down Winn-Dixie, Subway, Wendy's, Dunkin Donuts, and a lousy Chinese take-out. Besides that, there's nothing other than gas stations, cheap motels, and junkyards. The nearest Publix and CVS are miles away. There are lots of sketchy people living/walking around along Marina Mile, and there's no safe area to walk around outside of the community gates. Inside of the gates is fairly safe. There is no nighttime security working the gates, only during the daytime. Somebody please tell me how that makes sense'
The pool is the only nice feature. The free coffee and popcorn gets old after a while, and the gym is standard at most apt. communities. The management staff are professionally trained con-artists on par with car-salesmen and insurance agents. They will say whatever they need to convince you to sign a lease. They will make you think its a privilege for you to live there, not the other way around. Once you sign the papers its screw you, and you'll be treated like crap from there on out. They are rude and condescending towards residents. Every time I step foot in the front office I feel like I'm annoying them. They have prepared responses for any question or complaints you might have, so you're screwed before you even walk in the door. They put no effort into pleasing their tenants, and all of their effort into signing new tenants.
Overall, its way overpriced for a basic, stripped down garden apartment with no luxury features and no utilities or cable/internet. There are too many additional expenses beyond the price of the rent that are required to live here. You'll need to buy a microwave, several lamps, your own utilities, and your own cable/internet plan. Their one bedrooms should be in the $900-950 range, not $1200 that they are asking. You can find nicer apartments for less money without the hassle. I signed here because I didn't have the time to do much research and needed a place quickly. Next time I'll know better.
