Prepare to be jerked around

The up side is that I loved my apartment at Port Royale--it was very small, but pretty with lots of palms around it--and loved the location. The down side is that the staff is a NIGHTMARE. Very pleasant and helpful right up until you sign the lease; then, all bets are off, and you're on your own. It was as though there were a contest to see how difficult they could make things for the tenants. I had safety concerns about a violent neighbor, which were repeatedly dismissed and brushed off by staff. When I gave 60 days' notice that I was leaving at the end of my lease, they tried to charge me an additional several hundred dollars for being "late" (I was two days late--because the office was closed due to a hurricane evacuation). Then they wanted to raise the rent by $300 per month and charge another couple of hundred as a "convenience fee" since I was "late" with my 60 days' notice. I had to get an attorney involved and threaten to sue before they agreed that the extra fees were unreasonable. And of course they kept the vast majority of my deposit despite my having hired a cleaning service to make sure the place was spotless. I notice that 1 year after I left, my unit rents for over $350/mo. more than what I paid. And it's SMALL.
