In 2000, my husband, sister and I relocated from the Midwest to this apartment complex by website viewing alone. My sister's young daughter was to follow once we had everything set up. The day we moved in, the pool was filled with brown sludge but we were so tired from our 2 day drive that we signed a lease anyways. The 3 bedroom apartment was cute with an excellent view of the creek outside. That is where the nice place ended. The first block party outside had everyone smoking weed (including the apt manager) with children as young as 8 drinking beer. We decided that if we just stayed to ourselves that it still might work out. The A/C broke down on a daily basis. The "maintenance" man ended up being one of the drug dealers and would simply add duct tape to the A/C ducts so it would work for a day. He did let it slip that he didn't actually have a license to perform the work.
Shortly, two hard partying aggressive people moved in below us. They blasted music that shook our floors every night from 11 PM to after 2 AM and smoked so much pot that we were unable to leave our windows open or go out on our balcony due to the strong smoke. We tried asking them politely to turn the music down and shut their windows since we had to work early in the morning. At first, they acted like they were concerned and would turn it down until we got back to our apartment. We then tried to get the apt management to help us but since she partied with them, she said it was out of her hands. So we finally contacted the police to help us. They would turn it down until the police left. Then they would come knock on our doors and threaten us that they would be forced to hurt us if we didn't leave them alone. They said that they worked all day and deserved the freedom to unwind. We informed the management and the police about this but nothing got better, only worse. We felt so helpless and since we were paying over $1,000 a month, decided that we had enough and moved out 4 months short of our lease end. They sent us a bill for the remaining 4 months. We didn't pay it and instead wrote a detailed letter about why we were vacating and all of the illegal activity that we would contact the authorities about if they didn't let us out. Needless to say, we never heard again from them.
Only later did I find out about all of the sexual predators living there. What a shame that such a nice area of the city remains with this filth. Just yesterday, we passed by and saw the same maintenance guy walking across the street. So nothing has seemed to change.
