Almost a year

I've been here now for one year. I moved here from Philadelphia, PA. I completely understand what the woman who broke her lease was saying. Some of the neighbors around here do get weird, and, yes, they do harrass women and call them names -- everything from -----, -------, to pedaphile. Sometimes it can be uncomfortable coming and leaving your apartment, as if you're being watched, and a lot of people patrol the grounds with cell phones that will talk about you as they walk passed you. Or cars will just happen to start and drive away as you are about to get into yours or go somewhere. I don't know if it's The Justice League, Town Watch, or what, but it gets weird here. The good news is that there is a sheriff who stays permanently on the grounds, and you can call him directly through the management office.

The management has changed here during this last year. I just got a note in my door tonight that my rent is going up $70.00 to $90.00 per month, depending on if I renew a lease or not. Of course, I'm not thrilled, but moving is an huge expense in itself; and I'm comfortable inside of my apartment.

Oh, to the new management's credit, though, they do seem to care. If you tell them about any problems with people or situations or concerns, they will take care of things. They've told me that they want everyone to be happy here, but sometimes that's easier said than done. I think there are 250-300 apartments here in this community. It does seem that if you stop into the office, they will talk with you. They aren't too good about returning phone calls, though. Management will work with you to meet your needs, but sometimes you might have to ask or make yourself known more than once.

If your apartment needs maintenance, the office fills out a work order, and you're basically on maintenance's waiting list of work orders for that day or as soon as they can get to you.

I have also had two notes left in my door -- one was accusing me of hanging rugs on my balcony. I have never done this the whole time I've been here. Another note that they left me was to pick up my cigarette butts from outside -- I'm not even a smoker. Twice they have accused me of doing things that I have not done, and I can only guess that they confused me with other tenants. They have a map of where apartments are located. I've seen them look at this map in the office, and I guess it's easy enough to get apartments confused. That is something I don't like. Whenever I see a note in the door, I'm thinking "What now'"

There is a stray cat community here that hangs out around the dumpsters here and some of the tenants feed them. Also, if you are caught not throwing your trash into the dumpster, management will fine you $25.00.

Some of the pizza delivery places won't deliver here. They've had drivers who were robbed here. Their insurance companies won't allow them to deliver here, or the delivery places' managers just won't allow it -- so some of the local delivery places will not take your order if you live in Christopher Woods Apartments.

I, myself, almost got attacked by a man -- I'm a woman -- walking to the dumpster one Friday night at about 10:00 pm. He was drunk. He came after me. I asked him about the beer can that had fallen to the ground as I was walking past. He asked me if I was going to pick it up for him. I said, "No," and he came after me. I said to him, "Oh, what' Are you going to beat up a woman'" He stopped and thought about it and backed off. I went into my apartment and called the police.

There is an older couple downstairs who won't answer their door at night. They told me to do the same thing.

There have been robberies and stabbings here, but I'm not exactly sure if that's just in this apartment community or in Jax, as a whole. Crime is everywhere, you know.

Sometimes you see roaches, but if you keep your apartment clean and spray and kill anything you see, there really isn't a problem.

Cold showers are a part of the bargain. I don't know if they have such a limited amount of hot water for the apartments to use, or if they're being tightfisted with the hot water, but there is never enough hot water for showers. You know you'll be finishing your shower in cold water.

Overall, I'd rate this apartment community at about a six or a seven. I'm mad at them right now for raising my rent so much -- $20 to $30 a month, I could see, but not $70 (with a new lease) to $90 (month-to-month) -- but there are worse places to live. Home is where you make it and where your heart is. My apartment is nice, even if some of the extraneous stuff is not.
