First I would like to say that I have no ax to grind with Jan or the Dunes. My comments are strickly to help inform other possible renters. I visited the Dunes on the 7th of May. I had called Jan earlier in the morning and told her that I would be coming to view the apartments. She told me that would be fine as long as I arrived before 5:30 pm. I agreed and when I arrived at 5:10 pm I found the door to the office locked. As I started to walk away the door opened and a woman answered the door. She seemed adgitated and was very distracted. I introduced myself at which point Jan seemed to try to get rid of me. Jan told me that I couldn't view any apartment because the office was closed and that she had told me that it was closed at 5:30. I looked at my watch and told Jan that it was 5:15. Jan paused and told me that she had told me that they don't show apartments after 5:00 (A clearly obvious lie). I thought I was talking to Hillary Clinton for a minute. Jan had a maintenance man show me the apartment. On the way over to the apartment we walked past the pool which was closed due to an electrical problem. The maintenance man told me that he wasn't looking forward to doing the work on the pool because he had to drain the pool down below the area where the light is defective and he had to pull 30 yr old wiring through the conduite. The maintenance man told me that they didn't contract any of the work out and that they do all the work on site. I soon discovered that perhaps they should contract out the work because obviously here maintenance workers are way out of their league. Now back to the apartment, as soon as the door opened I recognized the pungent smell of mold. I in the past have worked in construction and apartment maintenance. The smell which I recognized immediately was coming from the carpeting. Mold grows beneath the carpeting usually from repeated steam cleanings. This usually happens in apartments because the carpet is steam cleaned and then the apartment is immediately closed up which allows the mold to grow. Also in the apt. I noticed a problem with the ceiling fan in the livingroom. The fan wasn't wired into the apartmens wiring. Instead the wiring was strung along the ceiling, down the wall, and plugged into an outlet. Now this may be acceptable in a private home but it is illegal to do that in a multifamily housing unit such as apartments. The wiring was covered with those plastic sleeves that are customarily used to conceal computer wiring in offices. After returning to the office Jan was still agitated and told me that she needed me to get a letter from my employer verifying employement before she could rent to me. Jan shoved an application into my hand and an ink pen. I started to ask Jan why I needed to fill out the application before having that employment letter. Jan looked at me with insanity in her eyes and made some rude comment to me. Then she told me or rather ordered me to go sit in my car and fill out her application, and that it would probably be 7:00 pm before she could get with me. The door was shut in my face at that point. My son and I looked at each other and knew that this was not the place for us! Oh and Jan if your upset about your pen...it didn't work so I threw it away! Honestly I think Jan was simply wanting to get the non refundable application fee. I also learned that Jan is the former President of the Fernandina Beach Chamber of Commerce. Hmmmm I bet there is an interesting story there somewhere! DO NOT RENT FROM THIS TYRANT!!!! I am sure there will be some response citing that i was rejected from renting for some unfounded reason so just let me say I currently work in Law Enforcement and my credit is impeckable, I do not speed, have loud parties, or break rules. Jan,I fear is going to one day cause a major lawsuit to be filed against the Dunes.
