Minusses: Melrose is (supposedly) a community of college students. Some of the residents look like thugs and trash the areas around their apartments or parking lots. For some reason, most of the trash meant for the dumpster winds up on the concrete around it instead of inside. There is a maintenance staff who ride around during the day, picking up trash and cleaning up the dumpster. There is a lot of noise from cars as they drive by (obnoxiously loud base) and sometimes from w/in the apartments next door...or even accross the street (obnoxiously loud base). The weekends can get a little wild, especially around certain apt. buildings in the evenings. You can here crowds of people (college-kids) outside yelling, fighting, breaking glass, screeching tires, etc. This lasts until 4:00 am on Thurs, Fri, Sat, nights sometimes. Someone recently spray painted the mail boxes around building 3. Recently, a murder occurded, a fight between room mates. I don't really want to deter anyone from moving here...but the "students" moving in are beginning to look more like criminals, or wanna be criminals. Sometimes, it feels like the "ghetto" around here. I've never really had problems with the staff. The accountant is young and has a crappy attitude...
Plusses: -you get your own bathroom -room mate matching, so far, has worked well for me. All my room mates have had lifestyles similar to me, quiet, studious, non-smoker, neat & clean. -I am only responsible for my individual lease. ( ) -I only pay 1/3 electricity, water, etc...FREE HIGHSPEED internet (unless they take that away--Melrose used to provide free local phone service...but not any more) -Convenient location to school and work. -scholarship programs/ financial aide friendly.
Living at Melrose is similar to living on Campus w/ fewer regulations/securities. There's no guarantee that residents are students.
The "security" gate is only manned during the evenings and only on weekends. But that is better than nothing. There is a decent work out room, but I wouldn't go there alone. (But I wouldn't go work out in any apt. complex's work-out room alone. )
If you have 2 or 3 friends you trust and can rely on, you'd be much better off sharing an apartment somewhere else. But if you don't have any room mates lined up....Melrose is an okay alternative. You just have to be careful, use common sense, and pay attention to what is going on around you ...just like anywhere else.

u get charged for internet and cable...just indirectly. if u compare ur utility bill to any other person in a regular apartment, theres is significantly lower and use a lot more electricity and water than u do...i realized this today as i was looking for a new apartment. also, it sucks bc they really screw u over w the lease. u cant move out unless u pay off ALL months remaining...
