When my husband and I first moved in, it was our first place together. At the time it was very nice. The landscape, while not spectacular, was not bad and they always kept it up. (Sometimes we wondered about the whereabouts of the lawn mower guy, but everything else was good enough. they edged the sidewalks, which in one or two places was broken up by the roots of the huge oak trees.) My particular unit left something to be desired, but they said the previous tenants were horrible slobs. There was a hole in the wall in the master bath that had been half-heartedly patched up. and the counter tops had just been spray painted, as opposed to replaced. One cabinet door never shut completely. that was the worst it ever got for me. Except squirrels found their way in the storage closet outside on the balcony. They ate up a lot of my christmas decorations that was in storage, not to mention they kicked out nearly all of the insulation above my bedroom, and onto my christmas stuff as well as all the other stuff in that closet. They did their best to put traps up there to deter the squirrels from getting up there. (And NO they weren't rats, I saw the squirrels on the balcony one day, then race into my closet).
Also, beware! there are NO washer/dryers inside any unit. There aren't even hookups for them! There are three laundry facilities in site. They closed the one closest to me at 10pm and didn't reopen til 9am. When I work nights and didn't get home til after midnight this was VERY irritating to have to drag all of my laundry into my car, drive to the ones on the far side of the apt. in the middle of the night. At $1.25 to wash and $1.25 to dry PER load.
The quality of the apartment complex was clearly old, but not too bad, all things considered. It was a great first-time place! The rent was the cheapest we had seen, besides government housing which I refused to live in. The management and staff were all very nice to us. My husband tried his best to talk with them whenever he could, so they were always a little more willing to fix any problem we had. They had a guy come in with wasp killer stuff that worked like a charm.
We had referred a friend to live there too, and about one month into their lease we moved out. Apparently it was a good thing too! My friend said her a/c broke. It was leaking literally all over the apartment, ruining the carpet and all of her furniture. She several months later still had no a/c, and getting replacement carpet was a brilliant fantasy that she still hasn't received. She's now taking them to court over the matter. We'll soon see what that does for them. She also said there's a rise of druggies in that area.
Although, this section of Lakeland is not the greatest. This is kind of a rough spot.
