Serious Safety Concerns.....

I am a current resident and have lived here for a little over a year. It wasn't too bad in the beginning, but things rapidly started going downhill. I live in the 1 bedroom floorplan(640sq ft.)and my electric is steadily $240. It's been rising. I'm honestly scared to open my next electric bill in fear of how high it will be next. I have complained about my air conditioner not working several times, and no one has done anything. I have contacted Progress Energy and they gave me weather temperatures of different days, well geez how helpful. I keep my air at 80 degrees and this is how high my electric is. I work two jobs so I am hardly ever home even using any other electricity besides my air on 80. Now, for the serious safety concerns...All appliances that are supplied in the apartment are old, but I'm not picky as long as they work properly. One night for dinner, I was preheating my oven and smoke started to come out...so I opened it and there were literally flames. I ran into the hall and got the fire exstinguisher. I called the emergency maintence to come out and look at my stove. The maintence guy was only in my apartment for a max. time of 4 minutes, looked at it...didn't even touch it..and said "I think it's dirty maybe you should clean it". I explained to him it wasn't that dirty to catch on fire and that it was that way when I moved in and that they should clean it since they let me move into an apartment with a dirty stove that is obviously unsafe. So after he left I thoroughly cleaned it out, I mean took out the trays...everything. I ran the cleaning cycle. It began smoking. Then within 10 minutes my ENTIRE apartment was smothered in smoke so heavy you could not see to walk. I could not find my phone to call 911, I luckily found an old cell phone that I no longer used, I had to grab my pet and run for it. When I called 911, they asked me to pull the building fire alarm...(he said it's required upon move-in for them to let you know where it is). I was never informed of such. So I had to go around to each neighbor to get them out of their apartments. The fire department obviously could not get the stove open since it was on cleaning cycle so they had to take it out of the apartment. The fire department also noted that our smoke detector did not work. The next day I called and talked to the Office Manager and he accused me of lying that this entire situation happened. I told him he should maybe call the fire department and do his homework before he accuses tenants of such things. He later called me apologizing. Mean while my apartment was smoke damaged. They immiediately replaced my smoke detector and gave me a new oven. So hey I thought everything was fixed, a week later I saw them putting my old burnt stove into the apartment below mine. GREAT!!

DO NOT BELIEVE SOMERSET WHEN THEY TELL YOU YOUR ELECTRIC BILL IS $60 PER MONTH!!! I've heard this from several new tenants and they lied to you. No one here pays $60. Yes, the a/c units here don't work very well here and mine is probably 30 years old. As a result, I pay for it with very high electric bills. Mine too are very high each month ($150 ), but during the winter, they drop down to about $70. I too live in a 650 sq ft apartment and am the only occupant so it's not like there's 2 of us living here and am not home during the day, but leave the a/c on set at 80 degrees as I have a pet. I have chaulked all the cracks and holes in the walls and around the plumbing fixtures, placed foam installation tape around my windows and door, turned my water heater down to 90 degrees, I don't use my dishwasher, I never use the stove and even bought a coffeemaker instead of boiling water for coffee. It never made a difference in my electric bill - the difference was $1, I'm dead serious. I once took apart my a/c unit to see where the filters were (I didn't know it was in the intake unit located in the wall in the kitchen area and was painted over) and was horrified at all the black/brown tar and filth inside the unit and ducts. I guess the former tenants smoked with a vengence and it shows. My lease is up soon and I'll be moving out of here. Anonymous, will you please tell me where you moved to.

Agreed, anonymous what complex did you move to? I am desperately searching for the right place hoping this doesn't happen to me again. My lease is up soon and I need somewhere else to go. Thanks!
