Too Busy to Rent to Us, Too Many Fees

I've been trying to make an appointment with the office staff here and they're incredibly hard to reach. If you work a 9-5 job you will never have a chance to get to the office unless you speed home after work and happen to catch someone in the office before they close at 6. They're not open on Saturdays, which (unfortunately) seems to be the norm around here.
I sent them an e-mail through rent.com and asked for information regarding the qualification/income guidelines and the dimensions of the bedrooms in the 2-BR, but never got a response by e-mail or phone even though I made sure they had my contact info. When I did finally get someone on the phone she told me that she didn't know what the dimensions of the bedrooms were and proceeded to tell me how much furniture she was able to fit into her bedrooms in her 3-BR to give me an idea of the size (umm, I need inches and feet, not "Oh, I have a full size bed, a night stand and a big dresser in my bedroom and there's still plenty of room."). She also told me that they didn't have a vacant apartment or demo available for me to tour, so essentially I would be renting an apartment here without ever having even seen one from the inside.
Can you say "FEES UP THE YING-YANG"' Good, I knew you could. I'd need almost $2000 to move in because deposits start at one month rent, plus a $300 pet deposit (100% non-refundable even though they insist that any cat living here must be fixed and declawed, that seems a little much for me. Heil, Hampton Greens! Pet Nazis.), plus a $100 one-time apartment home preparation fee (Didn't they scalp that from the previous tenant's deposit'), then a $65 application fee, plus my first month's rent. Jeez! If I had $2000 just laying around I wouldn't be scouring the city for a cheap apartment.
Also, when I did a drive-through, I noticed that the driveway is really, really, really long and the speed bumps are pretty high - I don't drive a low-rider but not everyone drives a friggin' Yukon, people.
I hear that maintenance is good and available "after hours" for emergencies and there's an option for it in the phone menu (when I drove through the complex I saw them working). The buildings seem to be in fairly good shape and even the back areas of the complex looked well kept. I didn't get out and walk around so I don't have any up close details to put here. I think I would rent here if I had an extra $2000 just lying around and was certain that I'd never need to contact anyone in the office at any time during my lease and felt comfortable renting an apartment I'd never seen. I guess I'm just too broke and too paranoid.
