I've lived in Ocala for nearly 2 years now. The first year I lived here I stayed at Stonelake apartments because it was the cheapest place I could find. Here's my PRO's and CON's on Stonelake. One may be longer than the other...
PRO'S: Affordable pricing for 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom apartments. Decent location right off of SR-200 and close to the downtown area. Above average maintenance, we had a handful of problems over the 1 year but the longest it look was 1 week to fix [once, other times were within 1-2 days]. Repair guys are nice and so is some of the front office girls, and I mean SOME. If it wasn't for Missy I would've probably set fire to the place. Front office hosts parties every now and then. I'll give them that.
CON'S: - Rising crime. My car was broken into once as well as many others. I've been offered drugs a handful of times as well as had to drive by some "unsavory characters." I've even seen guys jump the 8 foot gate diving Stonelake from Green Gables. - We had a crazy neighbor who worked for the Advenir company, so he was allowed to come over drunk and harass us. We aren't the "party" type but we've had pictures knocked off walls from him banging on the walls and police called on us. But none of which were as bad as his drunk rants, which probably happened 10 times. Front office couldn't stop him. - The electric bill was RIDICULOUS. Currently, I'm living in a 3/2 house and pay about $140 on average. When I lived in Stonelake's 1/1 I was paying anywhere from $190-$260, figure that out. - Paperthin walls. I heard my neighbors peeing, arguing, moving chairs... And worst of all.. Landscapers went to work around 7am and same with the dumpster pick up, which we lived right next to. An alarm clock wasn't necessary to live here. - Anytime I got a package it would get delivered to the front office and they would make sure I would never find out unless I asked. This has happened 3 times. - Pool was broken for 9/12 months we were there. - Due to the crime, we were forced to have a spotlight right next to our door. I understand it was for the crime, but now our balcony had no privacy at all, and we had to dodge a swarm of bugs EVERY night. - The paint quality was terrible. You could scratch the paint off with your fingertips.
AND ABOVE ALL. - After we left we were charged for EVERYTHING. $500 in repairs. Some were understandable... but we were also charged to have them wash the dining room floor. Unfortunately, we didn't notice we agreed to paying those charges in our lease. Our faults... but... wow.
In conclusion, Stonelake is a decent way to start living on your own and/or don't know the area all too well. However, if you're staying there and it is not your first year in Ocala... something is definitely wrong with you.
