If you're military, be sure to visit unfriendlytomilitary.org and read about the lighthouse court apartments.

They were not fair or friendly to many active duty Navy sailors when they had to break their lease to go serve overseas, making them pay high fees for "concessions."

The actual link to the article is here http://www.unfriendlytomilitary.org/LCA.htm

I do NOT recommend this apartment.

I read your site and while they may have been shady, this person broke their lease--they made that person pay back the free rent and nothing more. He got 1.5 months free, but that was for a 12 month lease with no breakage. He only stayed 4 months but expected to maintain the free rent--that does not happen, unfortunately. You should have got the promise in writing. What's more: he was TAD to the area; he should have signed a short term lease. Costs more, but costs a lot less that what the poster went through. I know for a fact that final duty stations are on the orders so he knew when he was leaving.

I have subordinates who thought the military clause applied to normal deployments. Most of the time, they do not. People who are in the military need to get acquainted with the military clause and what it really means. It also means that you get your security deposit back minus damages, and you are not forced to pay your rent for the future months you won't be there. It says nothing about the concessions you get when you move in and lie about how long you are staying. They do have your orders in front of them.

Yes, the apartment manager who gave him the handshake deal was shady, but he did not get it in writing that he would not have to pay back the free rent for breaking the lease when he signed it. Get it in writing--always!

Wrong, as a lawyer, I've reviewed the lease, and this young man will be getting his money back.
