Terrible Experience. Sold us one thing but gave another

I moved my wife, two children and I to Orlando in the final weeks of 2006. We looked for a place to live for more than four months prior to our move and The Grand Reserve seemed to be a value and in a good location. Unfortunately, our problems started before we even moved in. I won't turn this into a rant with all the little problems we had, but we did have some serious problems with the Grand Reserve so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. For starters, we were shown one apartment which we were told "would be exactly our floorplan" but we not allowed to see the actual unit because it was not reconditioned (or perhaps the rentor was still there). After careful coordination with the Grand Reserve by phone, we moved to Orlando a day before scheduled occupancy, however upon arrival we were told our apartment would not be ready by the the planned move-in day. I was never answered when I asked why I wasn't informed during our mutiple phone conversations. I was forced to buy lodging for my family of four for three days while our apartment was prepared. I was late starting my new job because of these complications. Not a good way to get our start in Orlando. Once we moved in, the problems continued. Several things were not in move-in condition and the requested repairs were done over time with several maintenance visits. Before the move, we were promised new carpet and paint however the paint was not new, just patch painted and several items were missed including a hole in a wall and paint on the floors and carpet. Our carpet was not new, simply steam cleaned and it was stained at move in. the prior owner had pets (evident by pet hair stuck in the carpet along the baseboards) something I told management was not good for my daughter prior to move in because she is asthmatic. I didn't place much importance on this because I was reassured that the carpets would be replaced prior to move in. Since my daughter has asthma, we don't smoke but the occupant below us and his wife were smokers and used a very strong cigar-type cigarrette. Since they were retired and home all day smoking, our apartment was nearly constantly filled with the odor. When we requested to be moved to a unit with new carpet as was promised (and with the hope of getting away from the smoke odor) we were told that none were available in our side of the community. Parking in the late evenings is poor - not enough spaces and some of the areas are obscure and not visible from units. In the weeks before we moved, our car, parked in on e of the less visible areas, was vandalized. Our neighbor's apartment, on the ground level was broken into. When our neighbor then tried to get renters insurance, State Farm would not grant them insurance citing that record showed that their unit had been robbed on more than one prior occasion. I can't recommend renting at the Grand Reserve. We simply had too many problems there.
