Security Deposit Ripoff'

I went and viewed an apartment this week and I liked what I saw. When the leasing agent and I sat down to discuss the qualifications for renting an apartment, I was told I would have to pay the Security Deposit along with an appl. fee. My thought was why am I paying a deposit on a apt. I 1. haven't even been approved for, and 2. haven't signed, yet even, viewed a lease for. She said if I wasn't approved I would get my money back, but if I was approved then the deposit became non-refundable. But then on the application it states that an additional deposit (up to one months rent) may be required after the application is approved. So if I can't come up with an additional $550 and can't rent the apt. then my original $250 deposit will be not returned. How about that! Just a way to make a couple of extra 100 bucks (which has a good chance of not being returned at the end of the lease) off people who are just looking for somewhere to live.

I live there...have for three years, and I never paid the amount you all are talking about. We got half off our first month's rent, application fee was waived, and our deposit was only $200. They do check credit. If you've got bad credit, people will ask for more money. That's just common sense.

I can tell you this about the security deposit, they tried to keep mine when I left, because of 1 (one) small grape juice stain. The maintenance guy that did the walk thru with me, told me my apt. looked like new, like nobody lived there, but when 15 days past and I had no deposit, I contacted the office and they informed me of the stain (the very small stain). I wrote a letter with the law that applies to security deposits stating they had to refund the money because they did not notify me in wiriting, they returned the money right away, and it was only $200.
