I have lived in at Science Drive for two years. I simply renewed because I spend little time at my apt and the majority of time at my boyriends house. There is a lot of crime in the neighborhood. This year someone got shot and my neighrbors car was sitting on four concrete blocks with its wheels and rims removed. Over christmas break the peep hole in my apartment was drilled out. People have gotten raped, from breaking in the first bedroom window. My neighbors installed a second lock on there door even.
A big problem I have with Science Drive is the "pet policy." I signed my lease under the impression you cannot have animals. That is not the case. Both years, I have had a dog and a cat in my apartment. I was bot happy! I also suffer from asthma. The office does not care.
Another issue is the carpeting. The first year living there I asked for new carpets and they told me I have to be a resident for one year (b.s). So after a year, I asked. They told me my carpet wasn't in bad enough condition. Needless to say, I told the manager I will not be renewing for this reason. I suggest living somewhere else!

yeah the whole pet policy is a sham. They say explicitly in the lease agreement that there are no pets allowed for any reason, in the event that you are found to have a pet and apparently even if they only suspect that you have a pet, you whole apartment receives a $250 fine. I have stepped in dog crap at least twice while walking to my car through the property and I have seen and heard dogs being walked throughout the property repeatedly. Now I understand if you are watching a friends dog for a day or two but I have seen the same dogs over and over. After speaking with some people who used to work in the office and a person who lived on the property with a dog apparently you are allowed a pet if it is for medicinal/ psychological reasons. It is fairly simple to go to your family doctor and have them fax the required forms or notes to the office to allow pets. Oh, also it was great in the fall hearing a pop, thinking it was somebody lighting off fireworks, which happened repeatedly in the wee hours of the morning for a short spat, and looking out my window to see somebody getting shot repeatedly as they tried to drive away. Don't get me wrong, since my previous review things have definitely been a lot more enjoyable. I have roommates who arent drunken idiots, maintenance has been really nice, and the only problem I have had was management not telling me about electrical overages causing my fees to go from 2.31 from the overage to 77.31 due to late fees. To put it kindly this community is te best of the worst. If you absolutely have to live in student housing I would say that this is your safest bet. It has far less violence and is not as much of a target as pegasus communities, etc.

i completely agree about the pet policy. i signed my lease knowing pets were not allowed, but i bought a rabbit before i moved in, and i was under the impression that if it didn't damage the apartment or the grounds, make noise, or cause any problems for my roommates, that it was ok to have him. i got fined $500 and was threatened with eviction if i didn't get rid of my quiet little rabbit, but there are people in almost every single building with dogs who have never gotten caught once. when i asked if there was anything i could do to keep my rabbit, they told me no - the only animals allowed in the apartments were service animals, and that there was absolutely nothing i could do to get permission for my rabbit. later i found out that was far from the truth - you can get a note from a doctor saying you need the animal for medicinal purposes, like the person before me pointed out. the people in the office not only lied to me, but they unnecessarily fined me a ridiculous amount of money for an animal no one even knew i had. and about the person who got shot - that took place right outside my apartment building, and 10 minutes after we heard the gunshots (which we also thought were fireworks) i walked outside to smoke a cigarette and saw someone laying in the parking lot bleeding while a girl was standing over him screaming...not exactly something you want to see 20 ft from your front door. NOTHING was done to ensure security after that took place, because at the beginning of the summer, the girls across the hall from me got their apartment broken into, and management couldn't care less. as long as you continue paying the outrageous fines they tack on anytime they feel like it, they don't really care what goes on inside the community. maintenance is the only honorable thing this business has going for it - they are nothing but nice, respectful, helpful, and understanding when it comes to things that might go wrong. if you want to live in student housing, i would NEVER in a million years recommend science drive.

Can you give me more details about break-ins and rapes, or is it just hear-say?

I had my sisters cats for less than 24 hours while she was out of town. Within that time i received a $250 fine for two damn cats. Its stupid, and they couldnt give me a warning or anything. How much can a cat or two mess up in less than a day ?

Can anyone give more specific information regarding crime?

not safe b/c there is window access in the front bedroom. Pervs break into the front window in bedroom A. Yea they are having "specials" but is your safety really worth it? My peep hole was drilled out and I was almost robbed b/c my front door was left unlocked. Luckily I walked into the room and grabbed a bat so the guy ran. There was a shooting this year and my bf friend was raped who lived in bedroom A. Though even if they break in it is easy to break into the the rooms. Your call. All college neighborhoods are unsafe but I'd go with one that doesn't have front window access.

the windows on the first floor are really easy to break into. they tried to "fix" it w/ a piece of wood that doesn't allow the window to open. the second year i was there i moved into a different apartment. i left after i moved in all my stuff. when i came back 2 weeks later they had changed the locks w/o notifying any of us. this lock took 5 min to get to unlock and too my roommates dad calling and yelling at them for it to be fixed. the first year i was there, there were a lot of break ins. apparently there were keys that had been copied previously and they were being used to get into rooms later on.
