My husband and I moved into a 2nd floor one-bedroom apartment 5 months ago. The carpets were new, the walls were freshly painted, and the kitchen cabinets had been refinished. I was delighted with the spacious interior and relatively large, fully screened in porch that overlooked a gorgeous pink blossoming tree growing beside one of the little ponds.
One of the first things that ever attracted us to the complex was the friendliness of residents we encountered while visiting a friend who lives here. We noticed a lot of dogs, and the owners were generally very chatty and nice.
That's not to say that the complex doesn't have its share of problems. The complex is older and does have some issues with A/C and water. My garbage disposal is moody sometimes and will spit contents back out the other side of the sink when I turn it on. I could submit a work order for it as the other two work orders I've submitted for air conditioning were responded to promptly and fixed, but it's such a minor thing that I've just adapted by placing a pot over it if I need to use the disposal.
People do not pick up after their dogs, and I've never seen evidence of a dog waste removal service, but recently the apartment complex did put up little dog-waste stations that provide bags and a place to throw them away for owners responsible enough to do so.
As far as "shady" characters go, I'm sure there are some, but I have no complaints about my direct neighbors or anyone I've met within the complex.
I have no complaints about noise either. Our apartment is right next to the staircase, and we hear every single person coming or going as the metal steps seem to amplify every sound, but we've adjusted and hardly notice it anymore. Anywhere a person goes, if they're going to live in an apartment, they're going to hear the everyday noises of other people going about their lives. It's just fact, and some places are worse than others. This is not bad at all.
I've read the nightmarish description that other people have posted on here, and it just doesn't apply to my husband and I's experience at all.
When I was younger, I really did live in a ghetto where it was common place to hear gun shots every night, to see men beat their wives/girlfriends in public view and have no one intervene, to see truly shady people loitering in parking lots slipping tiny bags of white powder into cars with windows tinted too dark to see the passengers, to step over the sleeping homeless on the stairs, and to fight to fall to sleep with the orchestra of poverty wailing outside the window. These were places where it was too dangerous to lodge a complaint about anything so you just lived with it until you could get out. That to me is a ghetto. In comparison, Bel-Air is a utopian paradise.
Yes, it is old. Yes, there are some problems, but it's safe, comfortable, and from my experience, friendly. If you're young and looking for some place to start out until you can get enough together for a house, this is a great place to do that.
Before you write this place off because of everything you read here, just stop by and take a look for yourself. Don't take my word for it either. The opinions of individual experience shouldn't be the deciding factor for you to make your own mind up.

What do you think NOW? Have the rats gotten to your apt yet? Have they started dying in your walls and smelling up your clothes and everything else you own? WHAT DO YOU THINK NOW???????????
