Renters BEWARE

So many things have gone wrong with this that I don't know where to begin. For starters, this apartment complex practices false advertising. We were told (and it was advertised in the rental office) that when we paid our $50 application fees, these fees would be refunded on our first month's rent if we were approved. NOT true. The lease is almost up and I'm still fighting for that $100 to be refunded.
Secondly, the first time we paid rent we paid for the first prorated month plus the next month at the same time. The apartment's bookkeeper entered the amount incorrectly into their computer and then later demanded the difference be paid DESPITE me showing her that THE CHECK WAS CASHED AND CLEARED MY BANK FOR THE ENTIRE PROPER AMOUNT.
Third, one of their big showing points to potential renters is the fancy new exercise gym they have. However, they say NOTHING about having to pay an extra $150 a $50 key fee and additional $35 per month (all non refundable) to use the gym until AFTER you've signed the lease.
Fourth, the "model" apartments they show are nice, but the actual rented apartments are nasty. The apartments are dirty and moldy with broken central units and water heaters, and believe it or not, in our apartment they painted the countertops in the kitchen and bathroom with regular white latex wall paint. You can imagine how well that has held up.
I am at my wits end with these folks. The staff are rude and not helpful at all with resolving these issues. I am contacting the St. Petersburg Better Business Bureau and filing a complaint, and will be contacting the States Attorney about the false advertising.

I had the same problem with my last 2 months water bills. I showed them my bank statements with the money taken out and yet they still claimed to have never received them. That was just one of a whole list of frivolous charges they pushed on me at move out time that they tried to pass off as being legit. They know that most of their tenants are either elderly or college students (like I am) and can't afford lawyers. I know that that is the only thing that stopped me from hiring one.
