We like it well enough

It is not the greatest place in the world but it's really not so bad as far as apartments go for what we can afford on our working-class income. We decorated nicely and our apartment is pretty cute. We have settled here for what we expect will be a number of years with our kids because we had to move a couple of times in the last few years due to private landlords selling their houses and we are just plain tired of moving. Besides, we like the amenities a complex offers and we don't have to pay for lawn maintenance & pest control like when we rented houses, so it's a savings.
We sprang for a corner unit with the big screened-in porch and really enjoy spending time out there, have quite a little potted herb garden, nice big table, and bbq a lot. Happily also our unit faces a wall with a nice residential street across the way-- some units face the parking lot which is rather dingy looking, I probably wouldn't be as happy because we like to sit and dine outside a lot and I admit I have a much better view than most of the residents here.
As for the crime-- maybe we're just desensitized, because we both grew up in very tough NYC neighborhoods. Sure, there's crime, but there are much, much worse areas in St. Petersburg and you always have to be careful where ever you go. None of any other apt. complexes in the area have it much better.
As for the bugs, when we first moved in we didn't see any, then one week we saw about 6. The exterminator came more frequently and now we see maybe 3 or so a month, but this is Florida-- I don't know anyone who doesn't see the occasional American cockroach (palmetto bugs, if you want to be cute, but they're still roaches). At least we're not infested with the german kind like most NYC tenements. We keep things pretty clean, and maybe we're just lucky that our neighbors are fairly neat as well both upstairs and besides us, and I hate them and would be happy never to see one, but it hasn't been a huge problem since that one week.
The neighborhood isn't bad, it's convenient to downtown and the bridges to Tampa, there is a big Sweetbay supermarket practically next door and a new frit stand opened up and lots of public transportation near by.
If you can afford something better or find something better go for it, but this place is about average from what I can see for the price.
