Safety Issue

A few weeks ago residents were given a safety notice of burglaries in the local area. My family took the notice seriously. A week later we noticed that the outer door to our building was coming off the hinges. The bottom and middles hinges had been completely ripped off and the upper hinge was the only thing that was holding the door to the frame.

We immediately notified the leasing office and Monday. On Wednesday, when nothing had been done I called back and left a message. Sunday when leaving for work the door nearly fell off when I opened it to leave. We called the office and demanded that this door be repaired so the building could be secured. We were told that it did not qualify for emergency maintenance and would be fixed sometime in the upcoming week. We reminded the employee of the safety notice that had been distributed and voiced our concern that the safety of the residents did not "qualify" as an emergency.

We are waiting to see if the door will be repaired!

Follow up: We called again on 3/14/07 and were told that a work order was submitted for the door, but they were behind 150 work orders. I was also told that the building number was not supplied by the person that first called in the request. I told them that my wife and I were the first ones to report the issue and we had provided the building number and address each time we called.

I suggested that they expedite the work order given that this was a security risk. I was told that there was no security risk since a locking door on the exterior of the building was not a requirement per the rental agreement. It was suggested that the door may just be old and it wasn't really broken by someone intentionally. I advised them that the door was is perfect working condition one day and hanging by a few screws the next. I told them there was no way for this to have happened without some outside intervention.

I then mentioned the safety notice that we had been given by property management. The notice mentioned burglaries in the area. I was told that this was not a notice from management but rather the handout was supplied by the police. The Police gave it to the property management and asked them to supply the information to the residents. I was told that the handout was to educate the residents about safety and to advise the residents to keep an eye out for anything suspicious. I said "Anything suspicious? Like a someone trying to rip a door off the hinges?"
