More Expensive Than It's Worth

Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2003

I moved from WPC earlier this year after they wanted to raise my rent $35/month for about zero in return.

First the good, which there's some. The apartments are extremely nice with new carpeting and paint upon move-in. The fixtures when I moved in were either new or in great shape, and neighbors were extremely friendly. The fitness room, after the expansion, is ample with plenty of equipment and a sauna. The pool deck was beautiful with a deck which jutted into the property's lake which had plenty of fish and wildlife.

Now on to the bad, which there's plenty. Last year, they repainted the entire complex in this ugly green/white scheme which I guess only the executives who made the decision could love (obviously, those people didn't have to live there). Plus, there's the floorplans and just sometimes idiotic design. The bathrooms in the one-bedroom are broken into a vanity with a sink and mirror in the bedroom and a small room (and when I say small, I mean you can stand in the middle and touch all four walls without stretching) with your toilet and shower. The utility closet inexplicably is broken up by four doors which means you can't actually put anything in there unless you can squeeze it through the narrow doorways. Keeping with the minimalist theme, many of the kitchen cabinets are equally small. Think this way, you have four across your sink area, each one's about the size of the phone book (one of my cupboards was used to house the phone book and a folder for coupons, and that's all that would fit in there). Your "pantry" is pretty much the room where they keep the water heater with two plastic shelves bolted on top of it.

About a year ago, the security gates were installed allowing only one entrance into the majority of the property which leaves a long drive if you live towards the back of the property... But that's assuming that the gates actually work! For the four months after their installation that I lived in the complex, the gates were probably closed for about 10 days. Now, when going back to visit friends still living there, they're still usually wide-open. When closed, the driveway is so narrow that if a guest is using the callbox to be admitted there's no way to get around them unless you can drive up on the curb.

Next is the rodent problem which was mentioned before. When living in Florida, insects are always going to be a problem. But when you're paying the complex to provide pest control it's upsetting when your cat is constantly finding roaches and palmetto bugs to play with. And then there's the ants! On four seperate occasions, my apartment was infested with ants coming out of the woodwork and even out of the fixtures to get at food. The staff offered no help except to tell me that they sold bug spray at the dollar store across the street cheap. And then there are the raccoons which hang out by the dumpster at night. Because there's only one dumpster in the entire complex, it fills up quickly yet is only emptied about once a week. So large piles of trash will build up, and a family of rats and raccoons begin to take over throwing litter everywhere. I'm a grown-man, but following an episode where a raccoon came flying out at me while trying to throw some stuff away, I vowed to only take out the garbage during the daytime.

Then there's the laundry facilities, or more to the fact, the lack thereof. For a complex which has so many units without washer/dryer hook-ups, you would think that they would offer more than eight machines in the entire community. And more than likely, a machine or two were broken which hurt that number even more. And these were coin-operated machines, but there's nowhere to get change unless you go to a bank or another laundromat.

Finally, the parking situation is tight if you actually want to go out after 7pm and the lighting is horrible. Many of the old street lights were inoperable (they've since installed newer ones, but they're sparsely located throughout the community) and for about a year the entrance where the leasing office is located was completely in the dark. Plus, I can substantiate many of the other complaints posted. So when they wanted me to pay more for all of this, I began to look around and found much better values at other communities in the area. You can definitely do better if you look around at other complexes nearby.
