Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2007
So far we have only been here for a month and 2 days. We like it so far... with one pretty big exception. While signing our paperwork, we were asked to sign a form that says that we would not place a satellite dish on or in front of the building. The only place we are allowed to have a satellite dish is on our porch. Our porch faces the West. We need a "clear view of the southern sky" for the satellite to get any kind of decent reception or work at all. When we moved in, we were told that our apt was "FiOS ready." We called Verizon to have FiOS TV installed in our apartment. After 2 times of trying to get the technicians to come to our apartment, we find out that we are not allowed to have FiOS TV in our apartment complex. (We ARE allowed to have the FiOS Internet and Phone but not the TV.) It turns out that the owners have a contract with Brighthouse. They have a contract with Brighthouse, not me. I signed nothing relating to their contract and I was not informed of this when I moved in. Brighthouse is much more expensive and less reliable than the fiber optic. So, basically, the only option I have is to get Brighthouse or nothing. I do not want Brighthouse. I have heard nothing but bad reviews from neighbors and friends regarding the quality of service and the reception, etc... I am very upset that the complex is telling us who we can get cable through and who we cannot. Also, it does not make practical sense that we can have the FiOS internet and phone but no the TV. Both services require drilling a hole in the wall and setting up equipment. After speaking to some of the other tenants WHO HAVE FiOS they told me that all of the services are pretty much in the same bundle of wires and boxes on their wall. I would understand if I received a discount from Brighthouse. I would understand if I was informed of this before I moved in. I would understand if this made any sort of practical sense.
Brighthouse does not have a monopoly on the Tampa Bay area and I feel like I have been lied to and that they are trying to force me to get something I don't want. I am the one paying the bill, not them! After speaking to other residents, it seems like this is no small problem.
The kicker is, the Verizon tech that I talked to told me that he had installed the FiOS TV in about 30 units in our complex before the apartment complex called Verizon and told them not to install in our complex anymore. Obviously, I am not the only one who was not informed.
When signing a year lease, I would like to be made aware of things like this, esp. when one of the selling points was that the apt was, "FiOS ready."
