Don't be fooled by the managers smile...

Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2007
I've lived here for nearly a year, now. The first 9 months were fine. I had been told the gates were hit by a car, just like the other reviewer, and that they would be fixed in about a month. Since I had not heard of any major complaints or crime or anything, it really didn't bother me too much, though I did feel a bit like I had been lied to. The girl who told me that to encourage me to sign the lease is no longer working there. No major problems during that time, and usually if I had a complaint, it was fixed within a few days, at least. Then the serious problems all started.
I got several new neighbors over the last few months. I have gotten used to neighbors coming and going, probably because they can't afford the rent, even if there are 5 or 6 in one apartment. Back in January, they set something on fire in the parking lot in the space right next to my brand new car. Thankfully nothing was damaged. The fire department came out, and at this point, I just started counting the days till I could move out. Several weeks ago, something died in the walls or attic above my apartment, and completely stunk up the whole place, to the point where I could not even bear to be in the apartment. It took me four days of stopping into the office before Jack, the manager, finally did anything. They cut a hole in the closet and sprayed some chemical all over my apartment that did kill the smell, but this new smell took over another week to finally dissipate. I appreciate that they gave me the model for two of the 5 days that I could not stay in my apartment, but I'm not paying that much to stay in a model with none of my stuff. Now I am battling to get even a slight credit to my rent for the time I could not stay in my apartment. So much for the "24-hour maintenance guarantee". They keep telling me that no one in the office has any authority to give me a credit on my rent, and I will have to go through corporate.
Of course, this is also complicated by the fact that I am trying to end my lease. Main reason for this is safety. One of my neighbors (I can't prove which one) vandalized my girlfriends car, and I am told there is nothing the apartment community can do. I'm reluctant to complain about them for fear of retallization against either my car or myself. I'm trying to be reasonable about it, and give them a 60 day notice to end my lease a mere 2 weeks early. Jack the manager is completely unwilling to even discuss an early lease termination, and will only tell me that if I do anything that does not result in my paying the rent and utilities up through and including the very end of my lease, he will personally make sure that my credit does not allow me to ever even purchase a house for the rest of my life. Also, that I should take his word that corporate will go after me for every penny they can get, and therefore it's not worth my fighting it. Sound like he's trying to threaten me into staying'
Through all of this I have tried to be polite and fair in all of my dealings with the management, and finally I am going over their heads to corporate resident relations, myself. I'll update this with any changes, good or bad once this is finally resolved.
