Leaving For Health Concerns
From: jneurock@gmail.comDate posted: 8/4/2007
Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2007
My girlfriend and I moved here in January of 2007. In early April our apartment's water heater flooded our apartment and destroyed our downstairs neighbor's apartment. We were told by two separate members of the maintenance staff that our bedroom was unsafe to sleep in, but then we were ensured by the property manager that it was safe. Due to the wet carpet sitting for days we feared mold may grow so we asked to be moved. We were told NO. Eventually, after a struggle, we were allowed to move.
Shortly after getting into another apartment we noticed mold. First in the kitchen cabinets on one of the shelfs. We asked for a new shelf and they gave us a piece of splintered wood, spray painted a color close to the cabinet. We next noticed mold on the wall in the bathroom below the a/c vent. It was promptly untreated and spray painted. It didn't take long for us to start feeling the health effects. Headaches, coughing, itchiness and fatigue. All symptoms which quickly went away as soon as we left the apartment.
We then noticed black spots growing on our a/c vent in the bedroom. Again they were promptly untreated and spray painted. We asked for more to be done at this point. There was a visual inspection conducted by the maintenance staff. They reported no evidence of mold, surprisingly, because they SPRAY PAINTED OVER IT. They didn't check in or under anything, they only looked around. We then asked for more to be done.
The area service manager came out for yet another visual inspection and reported no signs of mold. He only checked the a/c vents and claimed the spots growing on them were not mold. They told us they would clean the a/c vents, ducts, air handler, blower fan and coils. They also offered to replace the moldy caulk in the bathtub, the linoleum throughout and clean the carpet.
The caulk in the bathtub was promptly caulked over and the mold was still visible along with excessive amounts of caulk everywhere. They did come out eventually replace the caulk.
While cleaning we discovered a water damaged base board in our closet with black growth on it. We asked that the board be investigated and replaced. The maintenance staff guessed that the water damage was from carpet cleaning and then . . . you guessed it . . . PAINTED IT. At this point we decided it was time to go. The linoleum was replaced. The vendor that replaced our linoleum broke the pantry door and threw their trash in our recycling box. The vendor that cleaned the a/c didn't clean the vents or the air handler, so who knows if they actually did anything.
We are breaking our lease and trying to avoid the penalty as we feel forced to move over health concerns. AIMCO, the property owner refused to give us the regional manager's phone number because our complaint wasn't serious enough. We filed a complaint with the Tampa, FL Better Business Bureau. I would not recommend anyone to these apartments. Unfortunately Tampa is full of places just like this so we are moving slightly out of Tampa. These are only the health complaints, I could go on for pages.
