Let me start by saying that I have lives hear for three years come this summer.
Yes, the place is pretty old and it looks it. However, along with the oldness comes the square footage. I have a 3bd/2bth on the second floor, and thank goodness for that! The wall are pretty thin here and I could always hear my neighbor's dog barking and I can still hear the neighbors in the hallway, but my little ones can be loud in the hall sometimes too, so I don't complain about that. I am glad that I live on the 2nd floor because the people underneath always seem to have plumbing problems.
I have also been fighting roaches since day one. A word to the wise, if you see any roaches when you are viewing apartment, don't believe them when they say that it is because the apartment has been empty or anything like that. The pest control people are always about spraying and he used to come to my aparment and put down bait and whatever, but to me it seemed like he was putting down food, so eventually I started refusing him and started treating the problem myself. After that, the problem lessened, but has never gone away. I don't feel like the place is infested though, but no matter how clean my place is, they are still around, although the relegate themselves primarily to the kitchen and the guest bath. Ants come and go, but they are easy to get rid of.
As I am typing it occurs to me that I have been putting up with a lot. My car was stolen and another one next to it attempted to be stolen. It was recovered though, thank goodness, and since then there have been more police monitoring the area.
The maintenance is really nice and they are always prompt to fix anything that I request, at least they are now, it wasn't always so. Still, I got a new refrigerator and new carpet after I badgered them enough because the lady had told me the carpet was going to be replaced, but it wasn't when we got here, and since we had no choice(having been displaced from hurricane Charley) we moved anyway.
If my car hadn't been stolen, I would never had said anything about crime here. I never have felt unsafe walking around here or taking my trash out late at night. I don't ever see people loitering around or anything. When I was first looking for an apartment about seven years ago, I was advised not to come here because of drugs and stuff, but they must have cleaned the place up because I don't see anything like that now.
As I mentioned you can pretty much hear everything, but where I am, there isn't much to hear, so I guess it's okay. There aren't a lot of kids running around acting crazy, at least not where my building is located.
I also read something in reference to rats, and I must say I haven't seen anything. I am a little freaked out now though because I have heard noises, but I have always assumed it was the squirrils because there are millions of them around here and they certainly bread like rats, but I have never seen anything that indicates any rats.
Parking is pretty sucky if you don't get here by like 8pm though.
Overall, I would recommend this place. They keep the place very clean and neat. It is in a great location and is close to a lot of nice places and the Sushi place that other person mentioned is delicious!

A Suggestion: I used to have roach problems until I emtied all my kitchen cabinets and got the bug man to spray. That was almost two years ago and I haven't seen any roaches since! You could try that.
