Management does their best to negate the apartment's benefits

I move around a lot for work and have lived in something like 10 apartments in about as many cities. I've never had a problem in any of the apartments I've lived in - and most management have told me that they regret my leaving when I go - that I'm the ideal tenant. I just say this to back-up the fact that when I say this management is horrible that you understand it's not just me. Plus, I've spoken with other residents who've experienced very similar issues - but since I can't speak to their problems, I'm only listing mine here.
I love the complex- great area with a lake view, walking trails, close to shops, 400, etc. Unlike other reviews here I've had only good experiences with fellow residents and feel very safe. However, I would strongly caution anyone from renting here. The management is an unorganized, uncaring nightmare. Things will go wrong (leaks, sewage backup, air conditioning breaking, etc.) When it does they don't care and you're left feeling frustrated.
Below is my list of grievances - ranging from serious (sewage problems and getting verbally abused by staff) to minor. The short of it is that the location is great, but the rent is comparatively very high. You'd expect a very high level of service, but the staff doesn't deliver. There are a lot of other quality complexes in the area - there's no need to put up with all of this.
- My sewage backed up. Into both of my bathtubs. Very gross - then it started coming up through the carpets. I called once to report the bathtubs and found out it was my entire building. When it started coming up through the carpets I called again. This time when they came by the maintenance guy started screaming at me before I could open my mouth. Turns out he thought it was unreasonable that I called a second time. I couldn't believe my treatment and complained to the complex, who seemed to be very apologetic. I expected that they'd fire this guy - they didn't.
- I had a leak in my closet. Had to throw out clothes that molded.
- Air conditioning broke. I had them fix it and it broke again the next day. Rather than deal with them, I waited about a month until the GA heat got too much and had them come out again to fix it. (Works so far.)
- I signed up to have the rent taken out automatically. Twice it "didn't work." One of those times - I noticed it when I checked my bank account and called the office to report it and tell them I'd bring them a check the next day. Later that night (after the office was closed and hours after I'd called) I had someone slip a very threatening note under my door telling me that I could be evicted if I didn't pay in X days. And I was signed up to have my rent automatically withdrawn!
- 2 weeks before I was set to originally move-in I was forced to get a different apartment because the tenant decided not to vacate. Had to reschedule a bunch of stuff. They promised they'd make it up to me - they never mentioned it again and certainly never did anything to attempt to make up for it.
- My rent was also jacked up over $100/month if I wanted to renew. Seemed pretty large to me, since I didn't have a move-in special last year or anything.
- Management doesn't inforce any rules. The dog feces are disgusting. I have a dog and pick up after him - but it seems that few others do. I get notes reminding me to "pick up after my dog," but the management has never cleaned up the mass quantities of dog feces around the complex. Additionally, people park all the time in no parking zones (especially right in front of the mailboxes) and it's never enforced. So you have to walk through bushes and dirt to get to mailboxes, because all the pavement around the boxes are blocked by cars parked illegally. Bikes aren't allowed in the halls and under stairs. Management leaves notes saying "remove the bikes in 24 hours or the bikes will be removed" - notes sat there for weeks without the bikes ever moving.
- Straw that broke the camel's back: when I notified them I wasn't renewing my lease I gave them notice through the 31st of the month. They then called me to see if I could move out earlier because they had someone who wanted to move in before they had time to turn the apt. I said I could be out the day my movers came (3 days early), if they'd agree to not dock me for not cleaning the apartment. They said they'd need to inspect my apartment first, so I arranged to go to work late one morning so I could meet maintanance (who only works 8-5). So I waited - to have the maintanance guy show up over half an hour late. When I called to complain (I was going into work late because I was trying to help them out), the manager said that she didn't understand why I was upset. He had something come up that morning and I should understand.
- I called AMLI corporate office to tell them all the issues I've had. I was told someone would call me back within 48 hours. I never received a call back.
