Go for the six month lease to begin with

I agree that most people post here after they have had a negative experience and are completely fed up with the place, but these posts are still an indication of the things new residents may one day face.
I don't have ants or anything, so I consider myself very lucky, but I do know that there is a big "water bug" (roach) problem at the laundry room. The trash compactor in the front of the property is a nasty deal. Every weekend, it gets loaded up and the piles start stacking up in front of it - mattresses, stereos, doors (who is throwing doors away but the staff'). I try to avoid dropping off my trash on weekends because of this, since the area is clear during the week. Since children wait for schoolbuses in this area, I think it's poor planning in the design of the complex. Also, there are kids (ages 6-13) who roam the area from the hours of 3 to 8, which isn't something that you want to encounter after a day at work. The kids have no respect for adults and will taunt you to hit them with your car. The staff in the leasing office are obviously there just for the paycheck and probably mock you as soon as you walk out the door. With the exception of one, they are stuck up and appear to look down at residents, even though at least one lives here herself. I wouldn't trust them to take a message, which kind of sucks because they have to take a message if you have a maintenance request. The maintenance staff are pleasant, but I can't decide if the problem is that they have no authority to fix things without direct orders from the manager, or if they are just lacking some common sense. By the way, the whole idea of having 8 Roswell cops living here for safety is bull. I have met a few of them, and it seems to me as though they try to stay away from here as much as possible. They get free rent for parking their cruisers in the parking lots. Where is the safety in that' One of them is a violator of the pet on leash policy, but this is overlooked for some reason.
What I do like is the fact that the property looks pretty good. The stench of cat urine is only noticable during the summer and I think the maintenance staff walks the grounds daily to pick up stray trash and pet droppings.
Most of my complaints are with other residents, but I place blame with management for poor selection of these residents. Of course if you let careless people in, they are going to dump trash wherever they want, scream at each other outside, beat their kids in front of you, and drive too fast in the complex. I have a feeling that the people at Lane Co. who now manage this place, have increased the number of Section 8 tenants in the last few months. Nothing against poor people, but I'm talking about people who aren't even trying to improve their station in life. There are some section 8 people here who do keep their kids in line and are nice to live near, but then there are the rest.
I suppose it all comes down to what you want in a home. If you just need a place to keep your stuff and sleep, this place could suit you fine. If you are looking for a place where you can befriend your neighbors, you won't be happy. Also, people with children should stay away on the chance that your child too will start hanging with the other kids who clearly have no parental supervision in the evening.
Even though I like my apartment, I don't think I will renew when my lease ends next year. I don't think anyone will care when I go because there will be someone else (probably with a guaranteed section 8 check) waiting to move in. What kills me about this is that I'll probably experience the same thing at the next place I rent. But I'll make sure I stay away from a Lane property.
I would recommend that everyone sign six month leases so it's not too long til you can get out if you want.
