Generally good, but....

Years at this apartment: 2000 - 2002
I'll try to be objective. I fear a lot of reviewers get upset about one thing, and then trash an otherwise good apartment. I moved in in July of 2000, and will leave December of 2002. So here it is. The good the bad and the ugly.
What's good: Nice spacious apartment. Well finished, generally. Enormous kitchen, tons of cupboard and counter space. nice new appliances. I have a small computer room which is nice. Just big enough for a computer table and a book shelf. Bedrooms are a reasonable size in my two bedroom. Closets nice and large. Little problem with insects. My last apartment in Texas I had a constant battle. Well sealed all around, no drafts or anything. Grounds are generally well kept, although the people that live here really have to help out. Big fitness area with lots of equipment. Always clean. I live on first floor, but on a hill, so I have a basement apartment below, and my balcony is elevated. Convenience of a first floor apartment without people walking right by your living room. Can't say I've had problems with staff. Any maintenance issues are usually resolved the same day.
Complaints: I agree that the walls and floors are thin. I can hear every step people above me take. I try to be quiet for the people below me at night. If you've got a family with kids above you, you're screwed because kids run around. I can actually hear the guy above me urinating at night. Sorry for the visual. I have a dog below me, that barks all day, and reverberates through my apartment. Can sometimes hear the couple next door arguing.
Little shelf space in places. Probably want to add a few shelves in closets. No medicine cabinets in the bathroom. The en suite has a cabinet under the sink only. I love keeping my toothpaste next to my toilet cleanser. Had to buy two small medicine cabinets and put them up.
Otherwise, the interior leaves little to complain about.
The balcony is a joke. The cracks between the planks are so large, that every time your neighbour above washes or sweeps, all his crap comes down onto yours. IMPORTANT POINT: If you really value a balcony, get a top floor apartment.
What's been bothering me lately is property upkeep. My parents helped me move in two and a half years ago, and just recently visited. They feel the place has gone down.
Some are complaining about lease violations. I don't think they do enough, frankly. Neighbours across the breezeway have a small motorbike parked right outside my door. Leaks oil all over the place. They put their garbage out at night, which is a real no-no, as it attracts insects and other pests. I've complained, but nothing gets done. The breezeways are a real problem. They are just not kept up.
I notice the grass at the front of the property is always nice and green. The back of the property is all brown. They obviously pay more attention to the front.
Then there's this strip of "grass" behind the buildings, about 20 feet wide between the apartments and the tree line. It was never properly landscaped. Nothing grows, and it turns into a mud bath every time it rains. The mud splashes up on my balcony.
I complained, and they told me they have no intention of dealing with it. Too bad, be nice pathway to walk a dog or something.
The Ugly: Parking is a nightmare. I'm moving for this reason at the end of the year when my lease expires. I can't find a spot. I can't go out at 8:00 PM to go grocery shopping, because I won't be able to find a parking space when I come back. Forget about coming home at midnight on a Saturday, you're looking at a 10 minute walk. Problem is most severe near back of property, building 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, etc.
I'm sick of walking 500 feet to my door, so I've given my notice. If you rent here, head for the buildings close to the clubhouse with lots of parking, or get a garage.
Frankly, the whole place is looking like an inner city housing project in places. I pay over $1000 a month and I don't feel I'm getting value. There maybe other parts of the property where neighbours are more reasonable. Remember, with 28 units in a building, it only takes one jerk to ruin it for everybody.
