Ya know, I feel like moving out of the dorms was a three step process. In order to get from dorms to true on-your-own apartment living, you kinda need a middle step. University commons was that step. I don't feel like I needed it responsibility-wise, but I feel like it was a good social experience. Here you have 48 people living in one building (12 apartments per building, each with 4 people). Everybody is so willing to meet new people that you'd have to be from GA Tech in order to not meet anybody fun. I have friends in other apartment complexes around Athens, and I am the only one that can say that he has neighbors to party with. I don't know if I got lucky or what, but It's been a good place to live for a year.
