Your experience at Laurel Oaks really seems to be luck of the draw. My primary concerns as a graduate student were lack of noise and "college" atmosphere. In this regard, living here has been great. Our neighbors are very quiet, responsible people.
The apartments themselves are not bad, either, although I think they are not quite worth what you pay for them. We have had some problems with our dishwasher and bathroom fixtures... plus, the air conditioning systems are old and inefficient. The maintenance staff has always been nice and helpful, but it seems like the apartments would be better if the money they spend on quick fixes would just go into replacing some of the outdated features. Finally, the apartments all have that very pronounced "apartment smell" that no air freshener can get rid of.
The worst thing about Laurel Oaks is the management. There seems to be high turnover in the office... and often, employees are flighty and forgetful. All of that could be forgiven if they had an effective means of solving problems. However, when we have called the management office and asked for someone to return our calls, we never hear from them. Once, we went to the office in person and were told that someone was busy but would call us later. Again, we never heard from them.
