When I lived there, I definitely had a problem with ants that their pest control people really never controlled. But they did send them out. Unfortunately, I generally had to go down to the office to get in touch with the management because they didn't answer the phone much and certainly didn't call back when I left a message.
I had a lot of trouble with people parking in my reserved space. When I complained, the management would put a sticker on the car warning them not to park there in the future. The one time that someone stayed for a long time, we were just about to have them towed (there's a specific number of hours they have to be there before they will tow, 24 or 48 hours), when the person left and avoided the tow. When it was a resident in my space, they called them and had them move.
As for the condition of the breezeways: ugh!!! The stairs are always dirty and the walls need to be washed or painted. For the amount of rent you pay, it would seem to me that this cosmetic fix would be a no-brainer. The elevators used to always be pretty bad, but when new management came in in 2004, they actually fixed it and until I moved out, it still looked pretty good.
I did not enjoy the noise and general mayhem as the caliber of people they allowed to move in went down. I'm not sure if that's a problem anymore, but I found myself annoyed quite a bit by the loud music. Despite the appearance of such (ie guardhouse, gates), there is no security to speak of. I heard that they used to have cameras at the garage entryways, but they were ripped down and then never replaced.
All in all, though, it's not so bad. When I moved in, (both times, as I had to switch apartments when they renovated) the apartment was immaculate. That's much more than I can say for the apartment I just moved into, where I had to do a thorough cleaning before I could feel comfortable moving my stuff in!!
There are over 500 apartments in this AMLI complex, so the staff is stretched pretty thin. My advice is to build some kind of relationship with them. I went out of my way to be nice to the maintenance guys and they were pretty good to me. You've just got to go down to the office to demand that you get what you want occasionally.
On the plus side, the pool area is well maintained. The workout facility is pretty state of the art (and if you let them know about it, they will put in a work order to have anything that is broken fixed ASAP by the company who supplies the machines). We grilled out a lot on the deck by the pool, and enjoyed the free gas, etc. especially when it was too hot to cook indoors! (I don't know if they still do that, as some of the other people who used the grills were total pigs and also didn't bother to shut the gas valves, etc.)
If I knew I was going to move back to the area, and assuming they hadn't raised the rent too much (I was paying in the low 800's for the smallest one bedroom just before I moved out), I would certainly consider living there again.
