I wrote a review a few months ago, and had a much different opinion than what I have now. The Darlington is no longer a suitable place to live. The mangement, of whom I used to get along with just fine, have very rencently shown their true colors. I have to say, and this is something I wish I did when I moved in, if you decide to live in the Darlington, get eveything they say to you that is not in lease IN WRITING!!! When I moved here I dealt with a very pleasant young woman who told me multiple times that if I were to leave early I must give 60 days notice and there would be no penatly. She also told me that I was paying $150 to cover any wear/ damage to the apartment. She said "It's so you can to what you want to your apartment." That said, when I gave notice to vacate I was told that I am to pay $610 for breaking my lease (a month early). Of course the girl I had worked with no longer works here, and since it's not in my lease, it's basically tough ---- for me. Also, I got a entire list sent to me detailing all that can be found wrong with my unit and what I will owe for each damage. On top of that I am being told I have to re paint my apartment white before leaving, something I believed my $150 should have covered me for. So, basically this place is run by a pack of liers, who continually smile while they're screwing you over. I asked if I could leave just a few days earlier, since I'll have already moved out and to pay for another couple of days is a waste of money. Of couse they refused. Actually the girl said I am welcome to turn in my keys early, but I will be paying until my last day. Oh, gee, thanks. I can't even get into the unbelievable scam that is the water bill. I just thank God I'm leaving in a week.

You must keep a blindfold on in your apartment if you've seen only one bug. They are uncontrollable! They generally run the building. The reason you can put your name on the pest control list anytime is that they come by and spray, driving them to the next apartment. So it is perpetual. Further the reason trash is always thrown on the floor instead of deposited in the chute is that the chute is often over-run.

Geez, that's not very nice. I am used to a much higher standard of living actually. My first few months at the Darlington were really not bad at all. Of course this place is a ---- hole, but I'm a student for God's sake. I've realized as time has wore on that I should have kept looking and not settled here. I actually moved in as the result of a quick decision. I had moved into an apartment in VA Highlands, and had to leave the first day beacuse I got Carbon Monoxide poisoning. The Darlington seemed to be a fair alternative to a place that could have killed me. You can see by my new review, that I am no longer satisfied with The Darlington. It's unfortunate that this place has to fall into such terrible management. It's much easier to put up with some noise, smells, and bugs (I promise I haven't seen any in my unit, but no one seems to believe me) when you have acceptable management. Now that I am so angry with them, I have begun to grow more and more disgusted with this place. I will be very glad to leave.

Yes, the lease-breaking thing is the current scam. My lease of my $780 a month 1-bedroom ends at the end of this month, however they are trying to make me stay into March past my lease term and pay the month-to-month rate ($915) since I am not renewing. They sent my lease renewal/rental rate increase notice (being raised to $805 or $830 for 6 month) LATE without giving me 60 days notice, and expected the same of me in terms of my notice of intent to vacate. It was done as a way to trap me and get more money out of me. I will be posting and keeping everyone updated on the outcome of this.
