I also have lived here for about 3-4 years, and if my impression of the place in which I resided was so poor, I doubt that I would have been there for so long. It's unfortunate that only disgruntled individuals post on this site. Everyone that I know enjoys living in The Darlington. Some people have lived here for 20-50 years! I have no roaches, but I keep my place clean and so do my neighbors. Whenever I have a problem, the maintenance man corrects it within a day. We have a free breakfast in the lobby every Friday, if your up early enough. I renewed my lease for just $5 but I got that back when I won a cash prize at the pool party. I live here....I do not work here, and most of my neighbors feel the same way.

As much as I appreciate some of the sentiment posted here, this is not the typical experience at the Darlington. This person obviously got really lucky with some great neighbors but that is not normally the case, and that is the honest truth. Most who have lived there 5 years is because they cannot afford to live anywhere else (the studios are the cheapest you can live within the city and not live in the projects, honestly), so that isn't exactly a good thing. Most do not live there by choice. They either cannot afford anywhere else or cannot afford anywhere in that area for that price. That was our situation, and every single tenant I talked to (and I talked to alot). The maintance was awful: we had a fridge that did not defrost so every 2 weeks we had to remove all of our items and put them in ice boxes and defrost it (super time consuming and lost hundreds of dollars in groceries). They refused to give us a new fridge on the basis that "it still got cold" therefore "not broken." Parking is dangerous, dark and yes, there are break-ins often, or at least a year ago there were. The laundry facility is also dangerous. They have a security camera in there to monitor activity but no one ever looks at it. I was harassed constantly, and once felt threatened. Luckily several people walked in and the harassers left. The security does indeed just sit at the 'concierge' desk. Noise disturbances don't even begin to describe MOST people's experience there. It was unbelievable. I never slept. A few times, I had to go to a hotel because I needed sleep so bad (and that is saying alot, I have never experienced anything like that before). Most people there do not care about warnings from management to keep quiet. In FACT, I literally watched the office manager tell a chronic noise perpetrator that there is only so much they can do about it: meaning, in severe cases they will turn off your power. But all the tenant has to do is walk doesnt there and say "ill be quiet" and they will turn it back on--there is no limit to this. This particular woman had had her power turned off due to noise over 12 times in 3 weeks--that's 12 times one of her neighbors had to go through the awful hassle of getting management to do something ( I overheard all this while in the lobby). What did it for me wasn't all of this: it was the TOXIC MOLD. When teh air conditioner came on (its an inclusive system, meaning all unites are on the same air system) I began coughing and having pains in my lungs. Ive lived in old houses before, so I didn't think it was the building. Within 2 days a god awful stench was coming out of my vents. I visited another apartment in the building (a friend) and it was exactly the same. It was smoke, mold, dander and filth all mixed together. I hoped it would clear, bit I got sicker and sicker. Management told me nothing was wrong but this was not in my head. I had friends come over and they immediately got a headache and felt sick: symptoms of toxic mold. Maybe the people in the building who tolerated it didn't notice since they apparently have never breathed decent air. My mother is like this, as she is a hoarder and her house has eye-watering ammonia in it, and doesn't notice it. I didn't stick around to find out if I would die, I left after that. Breathing isn't a luxury. This is not a disgruntled former tenant because I am bitter that I did not pay my rent and got bad service. This is the honest truth. I respond to this because I urge people who are in financial crisis not to move her unless you literally have no other options. I was in this situation and the experience literally was way more pain and suffering than the money you save. If you can afford even a LITTLE more, you can get something way more decent without ANY of the horrible things going on in this building. I feel for the tenants here who cannot get out. If you have great neighbors and somehow like living there, then wonderful, I am glad for anyone in that position. But I am telling you honestly, I don't see how. This is not an attack, but a WARNING!!

"I also have lived here for about 3-4 years, and if my impression of the place in which I resided was so poor, I doubt that I would have been there for so long." This is a leasing manager!! I have heard these same words come out of their mouths!! and yes people have been there for 20-50 years, because they are on gov't assistance, family has deserted them. They only come out between 5-10 am, then go in side with the toxic mold for the rest of the day. i truly feel sorry or those elderly tenants. Especially the one with the tennis balls at the bottom of her walker.
