It seems that my upstairs AND downstairs neighbors are heavy smokers, and their smoke somehow flows directly into my apartment. I have used four cans of insulating, adhesive foam and other sealants to try to keep the smoke out. It's helped some, but has by no means been a complete solution. Someone I worked with suggested the smoke comes in from the exhaust duct of the HVAC system, not the gaping cracks between the floors and walls. Whatever the cause, I am unlikely to be able to fix it so I need to move again because I'm waking up coughing. I need to buy an air purifier. My upper respritory tract hurts all the time from living in this polluted dump.
I doubt this problem exists only in my apartment.
My advice is, never live in a loft if you can possibly avoid doing so. Old factory buildings are apparently not easily converted into flats. I guess the extensive construction work required to make the conversion is too expensive to make such projects obscenely profitable, so the developers cut corners. For instance, there is no ventilation in the hallways, and only one elevator (often out of service) and one stairwell in this building. In the FCML, unless you live on the top floor of a building, your ceiling is the upstairs floor which is made of planks and a thin coat of cement. There are no layers or insulation whatsoever between floor and ceiling. If your upstairs neighbor likes to wear high heels or dress shoes, you will hear every footfall. If your neighbors like to amuse themselves by dragging furniture accross the floor at night, be assured you will hear every bit of it.
