Sneaky Community... Avoid it!

Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2002
When I saw Rock Springs, I fell in love with it! Adorable brick buildings, built in the 1940's, each building held 4 apartments, well spaced on the grounds with courtyards between every 3-4, each building had a secure entrance. Inside-- all hardwood floors, windows on every side of the apartment including a quaint little kitchen window. And of course every kitchen window looked out to a grassy, tree filled courtyard because the backs of the building sall faced courtyards.
What's more, this community is located in historic N. Druid Hills so they blend in with the community as beautifully preserved structures. Well, the management company had been planning for about a year to tear all these apartments down. They wanted to capitalize on the location's proximity to the CDC and Emory and they knew from other nearby new communities that a luxury development could work.
So a few months after we moved in, we started hearing rumors from other residents that they were getting torn down. Every time we asked the leasing office, they denied the rumor. another couple of months go by and we get letters informing us of plans for a "gorgeous" new (expensive) community. We are told we must move but they 'll be happy to ensure we get priority placement for one of the new luxury townhomes.
By the way, we were paying $940 for a 2/1, they wanted about $1200 for something comparable in their new "luxury" creation. Sure I could have qualified for a $1200 apartment, but I'd never be able to save a dime towards a house or buy groceries for that matter.
Considering that this area is so close to Emory and these apartments were perfect for educated, middle class people, some of them grad students... it was a shame that the managment comapny ruined an opportunity to live close to a great university, the CDC, and other intown locations.
There some of us out there who want to live intown on "just starting out" salaries and still afford some of life's pleasures like FOOD for a picnic in the park or something. The management company took that opportunity away.
The most troubling part is, the same company had just completed another "luxury townhouse" project not even 3 miles away, and they haven't filled it up with residents.
So sadly now when I drive by, I see them building the "luxurious" townhouses and feel rage at the corporate machine for making it harder for young adults a few years out of college to have decent housing, near work, at reasonable prices.
When we did live there, maintenance was slow... not that we cared, we loved the building so much, we did most things ourselves.
