I lived at N Highridge for over 2 years... I was on a rent waiting list for a couple of months before they offered me a "large one-bedroom" at the time (2001) my rent was only 500.00/month (wow)and the kitchen appliances were new, but no washer/dryer hookups. The hard wood floors got constant compliments from people who would visit, but were rotten in some corners. the screened in front porch w/charming french doors, and large closet were a plus. mine also cool built in bookcases... the bathroom was VINTAGE, big old "clawfoot" tub with a shower curtain ring, pedestal sink with no counter space, but a nifty corner cabinet for storage.
Drawbacks included the NOISE and vibrations in the old windows from MARTA buses and car doors slamming at Videodrome (cool video store right next door), and as I was on the ground floor, I had constant noise from the upstairs neighbors (all the places have hardwoods there I think) that rose at 5:00 am most days. I learned something about myself during my stay at N Highridge: I like it QUIET, or relatively not as much 'city' noise, but my unit was on the corner of N Highland and North, so I got a LOT of noise, so early morning grounds maintenance was done weekly, and dumpster trucks were noisy. Parking could be difficult, and there were homeless people, but as the other reviews on this site state, this IS urban living. And for the price it was fine for me at the time.
The staff was young and friendly and helpful, they were flexible when I needed to terminate my lease when I bought my first condo. I never really had many issues living there for over 2 years, just a couple issues with the furnace. Energy costs were pretty affordable.
The buildings are old (circa 1930s I think''), even though some have been renovated / rebuilt in recent years due to fire damage, so be sure and get renter's insurance through your car insurance company if you can just to be SAFE.
