This is my first apartment. I recently graduated college and relocated to the Atlanta area last summer. The place has been ok for a first place of my own. However, I will not be renewing my lease due to several issues. The entire complex should be demolished and rebuilt; it's just falling apart. I had wallpaper peeling in places, tiles come out of my shower, and everything is just old. Flooring was poorly laid (I ended up with hardwood instead of carpet which usually is better, but I swear it was "used"). My outside windows were dirty when I moved in and are still dirty. My kitchen cabinets smell and are cracking. My stove needs to be replaced (I can't read the degree numbers and couldn't when I moved in, luckily I rarely cook and can figure it out). The windows are not properly insulated so I get a draft coming in through my bedroom window in the winter. The closet doors are a joke. There is dirt that is permanently ingrained. The paint job was poor. I've only had 3 roaches from living there almost a year, but I think 1 is too many. I recently had ants coming in my kitchen window (I live on the top floor) so I had to get some ant killer (which luckily took care of it in a day).
I have felt generally safe other than that my car was stolen after living there a month and I had to buy a new one (which has an alarm and kill switch now), but in terms of break-ins or crime, nothing has happened. It is very kid-friendly where I am. There are about a dozen or more kids who regularly play outside. I have not had much of a noise problem except from car stereos from a few guys who have thankfully moved. The gates do nothing however because anyone who wants to get in will. The exercise room is a joke...equipment rarely works and it's as old as dirt. Leasing staff is friendly because they want your money, but the rest of the staff is rather distant. Laundry rooms are always filthy.
I'd say for the money, you get what you pay for. But me, I'm going to suck it up and pay more for a nicer, better maintained place.
