Not all that it seems to be!

When my boyfriend and I came to check out these apartments about a year ago, we were very impressed. The layout is great, the balcony/porch is huge, and the price for the area was managable. Not to mention the kitchen an appliances are just great! However, there are a number of things that we've learned here that I think future renters should know.
First, the gates break frequently. Only a couple of months after living here the gates actually CLOSED on my boyfriend's car, even though he used his key card to get in. This has since happened to numerous other residents. Management refuses to replace the gates, offers no compensation to resisdents, and only hangs a 'not liable for damage' sign on the gate now.
Second, Parking is a problem. There are few parking spaces and people here seem to have guests over quite a lot. As long as you get home before 6pm, you're probably ok. But if you ever go out at night, good luck finding a place to park, especially on the weekends. I would also like to mention that one night, when my boyfriend had to park in a less-desirable spot (farther out, poorly lit) he came out the next day to find someone had poured sugar in his tank. We're quiet and keep to ourselves, so we assume it was just random vandalism. Buyers beware, if you have nice cars, get a garage.
Third, and our biggest complaint, is the noise. We live on the top floor because we like peace and quiet. And the din from the traffic on 85 really isn't that bad. But the walls are thin and insulation is poor. Our bedroom and the bedroom of our neighbor share a wall, and he has company over frequently at all hours of the night (2 am and later not uncommon). We can hear every word that is said. And when he plays music, forget about getting any sleep for the night! The seal around our bedroom window is also poor, so when he has people on his balcony it sounds like they're right in our bedroom with us. These problems started on the very first night we moved in and have never stopped. And from what I've seen around the complex, many people here like to throw parties, so I'm guessing the noise we've experienced isn't uncommon.
Finally, maintainance is a problem. Luckily we've never asked to have anything fixed. The problem is that they will randomly drop by without notice and come in (or demand to be let in if you're home). A couple of examples to share. First, not long after we moved in, it was early afternoon and I'd just gotten out of the shower when someone starts banging on the door. I'm not dressed, so of course I don't go answer it. Then I hear a key turn in the lock. Now the top bolt is secure, and there's no key for that, so whoever it is can't get in. At this point he should've taken a clue that I didn't want anyone in (for all he knew I could be asleep or in the bathroom). But instead of leaving he continues to pound on the door and jiggle the door handle, trying to get in. This went on for several minutes, and I was very frightened by his desperate behavior. I told my boyfriend about it when he got home, who contacted the managment. Apparently he just wanted to come in and check out air conditioner, which was perfectly fine and needed no repairs! We've also come home before and realized that someone has been here. One day I noticed a couple of door knobs sitting on the kitchen counter. For some odd reason, someone came in and changed the knob on the door leading into the Washer/Dryer room, leaving our old handle (and someone else's) junking up our kitchen.
If you can deal with all of these problems, then by all means check out the apartments. Even though the workmanship seems a bit shoddy in places both inside and out, they are nice apartments. Beware of the price hike, though! We are paying $900 a month for our one bedroom, and current prices seem to be much higher than that. Before dishing out the money yourself, decide if you think these truly are 'luxury' apartments.
