When Riverbend was built in the 1960's, it was nationally known, and won awards and accolades for being an innovative development for upwardly mobile singles. It was extolled in national magazines. It even earned notoriety as the residence for one year of the famous con man turned security consultant Frank W. Abagnale, (of the book and movie "Catch Me If You Can,") while he masqueraded as an airline pilot and a doctor at Cobb General Hospital in Marietta, when Riverbend was at it's peak. (A true story.)
When I lived there its maintenance had been deferred for too long, and shortly afterwards Riverbend was sold and completely rehabilitated with new siding, roofs, and interiors. I was very surprised by how many alcoholics, drug users, striptease dancers and prostitutes lived in my corner of Riverbend (I knew them personally!) though of course there were many more normal people as well. It definitely had a reputation as a place to party. One thing that apparently continues to be a problem is theft from vehicles. I too had my vehicle broken into and lost some valuable equipment. By the way, the gate that everyone complains about didn't work when I lived there in 1990-1991 either! Not that it would matter--there is an open back entrance anyway.
Riverbend's amenities include riverfront on the Chattahoochie River including a deck with seating over the river's edge, lighted tennis courts and a large outdoor swimming pool within sight of the river, a large party room, and a long, twisting reflecting pool ("The Moat") filled with waterlilies between some of its buildings. There are walking paths and a small bridge over a creek. Even though it is close to the freeway, it can seem secluded due to the many trees, a wooded ravine on it's west side and a lagoon to the east. "Ray's on the River," a popular night club, is nearby as well as many other restaurants and clubs. Freeway access is very close, and Riverbend is located between Marietta and Atlanta.
I'm afraid Riverbend's best days were over decades ago. It's a shame, since there are few places you can live on the Chattahoochie River.

Alcoholics, drug users, striptease dancers and prostitutes all need to live somewhere, too! They're EVERYWHERE . . . you just don't know it.
