Going on 3yrs...bugs are an issue

I've lived in an EW efficiency for going on 3yrs. It is very small (less than 400 sq. ft.) but with some creative layout planning you can make it work. For example, I have a full-size futon, upright piano, desk and bookshelves and still have a decent amount of floor space. The closets and kitchen are actually average for an apartment (disproportionate to the main room, but I'm not complaining).
The complex does have a cockroach problem, but I don't know of many that don't. I sprinkle Borax on my front and back porches and spray a non-toxic bug deterrent in the corners and crevices of my apartment. My main issue is cockroaches swarming the sidewalks and porches--I rarely spot them inside my apartment--maybe 3x/mo.
The other drawback is that the buildings are very old; however, the complex is making some improvements. For instance, we just got new windows and A/C units that don't let as much air in/out through cracks. (btw...rent went up only $60/yr). There is also a moisture problem, so you will probably need a dehumidifier if you have allergies. The insulation, in the efficiencies at least, is poor, but I found that padding the windows with styrofoam/aluminum sheets helps to keep heat inside during winter and outside during summer.
Overall, I think EW is a great place to live, especially if you work or go to school at Emory. There is shopping/dining on every corner, and it's on the Emory shuttle route (as well as MARTA). Plus, you just can't beat the price! If you are thinking of moving to EW, be aware of the 2-3 month wait, as people who move here rarely move out. For this reason, it may be tough to view an apartment in the size you want, but the office manager may be able to recommend residents who won't mind showing their apartment. Most residents are very friendly and welcoming.
