Gnats, Rats and Mold! Oh, heck no!

We've been here since August of 2005 and now we are trying to move out. The dust and mold affects my children's asthma, the rats, scare me and the gnats ruin my food. At first, I was questioning my cleaning skills, but when I realized that the gnats come from the old pipes in the garbage disposal that needs to be updated, I felt a little at ease. But not about the gnats, it just confirmed that I was cleaning as well as I could. Due to a proven banking error, our rent check was returned and instead of paying $599 for the rent that month, we paid $1240. What the hell is a concession fee' They lied and said someone sprayed for the gnats and when my husband called them out and told them they were lying, management became threatened by my husband who happens to be 6'3" and ------- American and they called the police. He is the police and had no intention of harming anyone, but advised the manager to back up off of him when she decided to invade his space. Management decided to call on their maintenance worker to defend themselves and he was the one who told us about the bad pipes, he pointed out the rats and he also admitted the problem with the water system. He looked at my husband with a grimace and politely asked him to leave. As if to say, "Man, I feel ya pain, but for the sake of these crazy fools, just leave it alone!" We intend to move immediately and do not suggest anyone else move to a place where they are treated unfairly or can't get a good response to their rental issues.

I lived in those apartments for several years through several management teams. It has become terrible. I suggest that anyone who is having a problems, get the address for the main management office in Chicago, (just keep asking for everyone's boss) and write them a letter. It worked for me. They won't respond favorably until you do. they will challenge and argue, and you don't have to put up with that. Document everything. I was truly prepared to go to court with those people. I say don't stay and put up with mold, rats or anything else that makes your living unbearable. I've know many (about 3-4) families that broke their lease and moved because the apartments were unlivable. Don't be afraid to talk with an attorney.
