Not bad

I spent about 15 months living here, from the fall of '03 to the spring of '04.

Overall, I liked it. It?s not the greatest place I?ve ever lived, but it?s definitely one of the better apartment ?communities? I?ve lived in.

The floor plans were extremely spacious. Especially the living/common rooms and the bathrooms. Damn near cavernous. The layout of the space was also very satisfying. And the price, when compared to comparable places in the area, was very competitive.

Parking was kind of hit or miss. Depending on which building you were in, parking was more or less an issue, though, in general, I don?t recall ever really having a problem. Some units (though not mine) do have garages, but I?m told those usually have a pretty substantial waiting list.

I had very few interactions with the staff there, but when I did, it was usually pleasant and a relatively painless process. They were (typically) friendly and fairly efficient. When I had packages delivered, the office was always able to take them and was very good about securing them. When it was time for me to leave, they made me a good offer to stay, but also made it fairly painless to exit. And, most pleasing of all, they were very fair and generous about returning my deposit, unlike many places I?ve lived.

My neighbors were all quiet (or the soundproofing is *that* good) and generally kept to themselves.

The grounds were very large, spacious and very well kept. There's a very large, open area and it's easy to play or relax, without bumping against other people.

Now the bad news:

I had a problem with the furnace/air pump. When the A/C would run for any length of time, it would leak water. Now, it only really dumped this water onto the concrete slab in the access closet, but it could dump enough to get out to the carpeting and the sound of splashing water was a real distraction. Though I reported this on several occasions, and they did send someone out once, they never really seemed to take it seriously or make any good faith attempt to resolve it. I ended up MacGyver?ing a solution, but it required me to empty a bucket about once every 20-30 hours (depending on the weather conditions and A/C usage)

Also, for several months, there was a SERIOUS ant problem. All over the complex, not just in my building. Each morning when I woke up and each evening when I came home from work, I got to find where the new ant trail was and what they?d ruined in the process. They spent what felts like months fooling around, taking complaint after complaint without really getting anything done. They did, eventually, get someone in there that knew what they were doing and the ant problem was quickly resolved. Additionally, no further insect issues ever occurred during my stay. I definitely felt like they should have done something a lot faster.

There?s three, if I recall correctly, mail ?stations? where renters have their mailboxes. For most of my time there, each station also had a drop-box where you could put outgoing mail in a locked container. Well, sometime around the late-summer/early-fall of ?03, someone figured a hack or something around the locks on the drop boxes and was routinely stealing mail. Despite repeated complaints, the management did nothing to prevent this or provide any warning that this was happening. Eventually, they just boarded up the outgoing mail drops and called it a solution. None of the incoming mail was ever compromised, to the best of my knowledge, but I still felt like this solution was a cop out.

Bottom line: (1) would I live here again' (2) would I recommend this place to a friend'

I don?t really like apartment living, but this was a better than average place all-in-all. I don?t think I would have any complaints about living here again.

Likewise, if I had a friend looking for a place in that area, I would give him the same warnings I?ve provided here, but would, ultimately, give this place thumbs up.

(side note: It's been a while, so i'm only estimating the rent and deposit i paid in this form; your mileage may vary.)
