I am sure that you didn't have renters insurance and thats why you are so upset. It is not the apartment communities responsibility to do anything when there is a breakin. Its just like a regular house. The neighborhood watch people aren't going to buy you new stuff. As far as telling the apartment community they are supposed to send out a letter to the community and that is all thats required. Apartment breakins are a regular occurance and unfortunatly there is nothing that anybody can do about that. Again, the same with houses. Sorry this happened to you but blaming the apartment community isn't going to get your stuff back. Its your responsiblity to have renters insurance.

Well Anonymous, you sure have a good opinion and I agree about the renters insurance; however, I live there and this place sucks. People have dogs that crap all over and management does little to stop it, yea send letters but when I tell them exactly who is doing it and nothing get done, well that shows the quality management. Also it is like living in Mexico and when my lease is up I am gone the crime and crap that goes on there is just plain insane. So unless you live at Gables and don't work there you should keep your comments to yourself.

Excuse me, pissedoff30097, I do live at Gables and I don't work there and he/she is right. Who would you blame it on if you lived in a neighborhood and your house got broken into? No one, because it's your responsibility to have insurance! I very seriously doubt that anyone told you that this place was safe - crime happens everywhere no matter how "nice" a place is. Last time I checked there weren't any police officers working the front office at Gables and unless that happens the people who do work in the office are not crime fighters. They do what they can to try to have a nice and comfortable place for their tenants to live, but they can't guarantee anyone's safety! Even the cops can't do that! If you think that "Mexico" only moved to Gables Sugarloaf (nice racism, by the way) try to find somewhere that doesn't have any people from other countries living in it...I'm sure you'll be really happy with your next apartment until you notice that there are those darker skined people that live there. I guess your new apartment will be in a bubble so you can be "safe." I'm sorry you got broken into but crime happens and you can't go blaming everyone except the person who commited the crime.

Well, "idiotsannoyme", you must constantly be annoyed with yourself, because you surely are an idiot. The poster's comments were related to the overall safety of the community, versus the value, or importance of renters insurance. Renters insurance is always recommended, however, this community has had a track record of crimes related to break-in's and vandalism, which is the issue. Not to mention the capture of a "most wanted" sex offender, a prostitution ring being operated out of one of the buildings, in addition to other issues identified by the origonal poster. I've heard gunshots behind my building around 2:00 AM in the past few months, which is quite scary, to say the least. Seems that it was in the complex adjacent to ours, but still unnerving to be awaken by gunshots.
Having addressed the reply to the need for insurance versus the overall safety and quality of live concerns at this complex, I do have to say that it has improved over the past year. We did have an issue with unsupervised kids reaking havoc throughout the complex, which was addressed by management after several complaints, including myself after my car was damaged. The tenants in question are no longer living here, however, management does need to continue being vigilant in enforcing the terms of the lease and community guidelines, which could be improved. Not sure if it's legal to check for outstanding warrants or if a prospective tenant is a registered sex offender, but that would help keep the community safer. They may be doing that now, since the quality of tenants moving into the community has improved. What I mean by that, is that more professional individuals with a higher level of income seem to be moving in, which is a good thing for all of us that have been through a few trying years.
They are making this a better community, in my opinion as a 4-year resident. One thing they need to improve upon, would be upgrading the apartments for existing tenants, rather than wait until they move out. It is annoying to hear that some residents are receiving upgraded ceiling fans and fixtures, when I keep reporting the same maintenance issues year after year. Their idea of fixing my stove is to put a new knob on for non-working burners, or an oven that runs 150 degrees below the set temperature. Forget about gourmet cooking, if you move here, because the appliances are old and they will not replace them.
That's apartment life, which is why I have opted to move rather than the crime rate. I live on a first floor unit and am one of the few that has not been broken into in my building during my stay. Why? I have a protective dog that only barks whenever someone comes near my door and I've taken measures to prohibit easy window access, as well as possessing personal protection.
In summary, crime does happen everywhere, but it does seem to happen more in this particular part of Gwinnett County. Thanksgiving through the end of New Year has historically been when this complex experiences a high rate of smashed car windows and attempted apartment break-in's, attempting to steal everything in sight. It's not unusual to see 10-15 smashed car windows over the holidays, so residents do need to be careful to park in a highly visable area. Doesn't always matter, but it helps, which is to address the larger issue of overall community safety. We should all carry good insurance, but, the apartment complex also has some responsibility in protecting their tenants, specifically during historical times of high crime. There are several attorneys in the Atlanta area now going after complexes that put the safety of their resident in jeopardy, due to inaction, so Gables better get their act together for the upcoming "Crime Season" and take proactive measures with increased security.
Just my two cents from a current resident.
