Best to Look Elsewhere

Years at this apartment: 1998 - 2001
 
I lived at Crestmark for nearly four years. Two items kept me from staying there:



1. Living below two or three different tenants for 3 years, I had no complaint with respect to noise - yes, I heard footsteps, but only one step out of ten. Then came the last tenant - heard every one of her steps. This, along with her noisy guests at 1 AM, became a thorn in my side.



2. Time came to renew the lease. Under new management, the lease had changed. Terms of the lease included at least two items dealing with the amount of rent - basically, they would have the right to hike the monthly rental amount whenever they felt the need to do so. Of course the office assured me that that would never be the case!



I had asked that they produce a lease like that of the past three that I had signed with them. The office said they would search for an old copy. After a week, they inform me that they could not find one - thus, we would need to work with the new lease. Guess a copy of my copy would not help!



We go to work on the new lease. Going through the new lease, line-by-line, and referencing the older leases, I highlite several concerns and possible remedies. A couple of weeks go by, only to receive word that due to too many differences that they would not be able to write any riders to the new lease.



Searching locally, I find a new apartment offering 1 free rent and a monthly rental amount $75 less than what my new rent would have been at Crestmark. What?s even better is that I have no annex to the city zoo living above me.



Received a postcard the other day from the Crestmark. They really must be hurting bad - they are offering "2 months of FREE RENT*!!!" (OK, so what is the ?*? after rent - no footnote found on the card.)



BOTTOM LINE - The lease has serious problems. No one that manages his/her affairs well would ever sign such a lease. Noting the general degradation of the quality of the tenants within the past year of being there proves this statement.
