A year ago when I moved into East Lake, I thought I was making an informed decision with my choice to live here.

A friend of mine lived here for 6 months prior to my moving in, and I had spent a lot of time at her apartment and knew the community well.

It wasn't be any means the ritz carlton of apartment communities, but it's close to 75, quiet, affordable, and overall worth it for the price.

I was sooooo wrong!

Upon moving in the management was really nice, and accomodating.

After that the entire community quickly turned for the worse.

Incident #1: The very first month following the move in, I walked to the office and delivered the rent check.

And low and behold...a few days later I find that my bank is calling me because I have overdrafted.

Not because I didn't have enough money to pay the rent, but because the apartment community decided to cash the check twice.

Evidently the electronically scanned the checks on-site, therefore withdrawing the money from the account and then they proceeded to take the checks to the bank shortly thereafter and deposit them again.

This happened to a number of individuals and was quickly followed by an apology letter.

Granted the apology letter was a nice gesture, but the real question is...where is my money' The management paid all of the residents that were affected the money that they were owed, plus the overdraft charge.

Luckily for me I had several overdraft charges because I had purchased a few things since paying the rent...so I was hit with 5 $30 charges and management only decided they were responsible for one...so they only paid for one.

I considered this to be a big welcome to the community!


Incident #2: About two months into my lease I came home from work to discover police vehicles surrounding the pool area (my apartment looks out over the pool).

Evidently two squad cars came to arrest a certain individual that lived in the community for drugs, gang violence, and who knows what else.

And in the process of apprehending the criminal, the rest of his gang members and their girlfriends/wives/mothers/children decided to protest.

(I wasn't aware that you could protest a criminal conviction...but whatever) Throughout the entire scuffle several individuals became so out of hand that the policemen called for back-up, and 14 squad cars later we had a mini riot on our hands...lucky for me I had a front row seat (insert sarcasm here).

By the end of it all four people were arrested and once the crows dissapated, the only person left was a three year old.

That's right, a three year old apparently the baby-momma's forgot about one of the kids.

Incident #3: Two months before my lease is over, my grandfather passes away.

I have to go two hours outside of Atlanta to be with my family during this time.

This also happened to be around the first of the month, and I'm sorry but my rent wasn't the most important thing to me at that point.

Upon my return, I went to the office to apologize for my late rent (I've never paid late the entire time I was here) and to say if you could please waive the late charge, I was out of town due to the passing of my grandfather.

And even with his obituary in hand, was told "I'm sorry, but you owe us your rent plus $80 since you're past the grace period" Wonderful people huh'

Incident #4: And last but not least, I'm finally moving out!! Whoo-hooo!!! Not so fast...management has done it again! With my lease soon coming to an end, management sends a letter stating that the lease period is almost over, and to please let them know if we are planning to stay, and to please review the lease to determine what the proper notification period is.

So my answer of course was "I'm getting the hell out of here" and I looked at the lease, and on a misreading on my part I thought the notification period was 30 days prior to the move out date (this is the normal notification for most places).

And a week prior to the 30-day mark I walked into the office to say that I was leaving East Lake and they said "the notification period is 60 days".

My option is to re-new my lease, or pay the rental rate for my apartment as the month-to-month rate.

Which is $200 more than what I normally pay.

Either way, I'm not getting out of the day that my lease actually ends...because I have surpassed the 60 day mark.

(Mind you the 60-day mark also happened while I was at my grandfather's funeral) So now I'm stuck paying $920 for an extra month because I didn't give them two months notice, and now that I'm locked into the month-to-month leasing if I want to leave the notification period is, guess what...30-days...that's right 30-days.

I've asked why is there a difference between the month-to-month and year leasing notification periods, and management has no other answer other than "it's in the lease".



So, like I said...Do NOT move here! This place is terrible to their good tenants, and wonderful to the hoodlums!

It sounds like you are a little unorganized and didn't make yourself well informed. I love East Lake!! My boyfriend and I just moved here a little over a month ago and we love it!!!
