Four Years Later...Still Fighting w/This Property

I excitedly moved into Wesley Paces in November of 2002. The 1 bedroom w/study was an ideal floorplan, and the location in proximity to my office was the BEST. Howver, that is all the good news I have...

At the time of lease signing, the complex was running a promotion for signing a 15-month lease; the incentive was that the last month's rent was free. I signed the lease under this agreement, and when the 15th month rolled around, and I was re-newing my lease, the manager told me she had no idea of such a promotion. Rather than investigate it (they change managers as often as most folks change their minds), or I find my leasing agreement, I forgot about it, and signed another 9-month lease, making my tenure there, 2 years.

While deciding to purchase a home after the lease was up, I started digging through my financial records and found the previous lease agreement that did, in fact, promise me a free month's rent. I took the lease to the manager on duty, ---- -----, and she agreed that it was legitimate, and gave me the next month's rent free. This would have been the month of August. I did not pay August's rent, and was happy to have this matter resolved. To my dismay, and about 10 days after the 3rd of the month, the courtesy officer was coming through my complex...imagine my shock to see that she was placing an eviction notice on MY door...for NOT paying the August rent. I was livid. I called the office again, and spoke to Ms -----, who assured me that it was an oversight and she would take care of it. By this time, I have no trust in her, so I wrote a letter, and contacted an attorney. The attorney advised me to answer the charge, and he was in touch with the attorney handling the case for Wesley. When we arrived at court, the attorney was all too quick to tell the judge that there was a grave mistake, and wanted it dismissed. I, on the other hand, countered with what I felt would be justifiable concessions. I asked to be let out of the lease, and promised that this would not be reflected on any credit report. This was agreed to, and promised.

Before I could leave the complex, a gang of "painters" came into the apartment while I was dressing for work one morning, with instructions to paint the apartment because it was 'empty'. I had my name and contact information taken out of the gate, so I had no access, nor could any of my visitors contact me for entrance. We would just have to "luck up" and come when the gates were open (which was most of the time, anyway). Every call to the complex was with a different leasing agent, or manager. The corporate office doesn't return phone calls, and it was one nightmare after another. I never knew on a day-to-day basis what to expect from them. When they knew of my leaving (as if the attorney had not shared this information), they attempted to make me pay for the built-in desk that was attached to the wall in the study room. I never realized the justification of this, as I didn't ask them to put it there, it was a part of the apartment when I moved in. It was just something keeping me from using one of the walls in the room, as I had my own office desk there.

Now that I am in the market for another place, I have learned that Wesley Paces did, in fact, lodge a negative report on one of my credit bureaus. They are showing that I owe them close to $2000.00. I owe them nothing, and while they will not respond to my phone calls, we will shortly see them responding to legal charges. I have a co-worker who is experiencing some of the same things with the Wesley Apartments over on Graves Road, as well.

I recommend these apartments to no one. The turn-over for management staff is atrocious, and from one instance to another, you could never get a firm answer from anyone. They are poorly built, and only if you like your neighbor's noises will you enjoy living here.
