Yestoday afternoon, my wife arrived home early. The scene she saw was terrible. The door was wide open. A small thin piece of wood which used to be part of the door frame was lying on the ground. Somebody broke in our apartment and took away the 1 month old Sony LCD TV - our only luxury item. The worst thing is that looking from outside of the entrance, there is no visible damage on the door. There is no sign that any tool was used for breaking in. It looks like it did not take the burglar much effort. One more apartment was broken in the same time. Same situation, not much damage on the door. This morning we went to the rental office to request to move out the complex, was asked to pay the penalties of breaking the lease. As for the door repair, the thin piece of wood was put back to the door with nails two times the thickness of a office staple. Several longer screws were used. No comments, you make the judgement.

I am so sorry that this has happened to you. Crime is becoming a huge problem in Atlanta, and is now seemingly moving towards the suburbs. I understand your concern over what happened, but you should not blame management for the problem. Wynfield Trace is not a gated community, and even those communities have these types of problems. You may have been spotted with your new TV, or someone may have known you purchased it. This could have caused you to be the target, whatever the reason; management cannot just let a resident out of a lease. As a management company you serve the client, and his asset. Crime cannot be held against the management company or the owner. Crime has no address. My best advice would be to get renter's insurance which I am sure they encouraged when you moved in, and get an alarm. TPS and ADT have great systems for apartments. I happen to be a property manager myself, and have dealt with a lot of crime. My property is located in Midtown/Upper west side of Atlanta. We always encourage residents to get alarms and insurance, and they usually don't until after they have been targets. I am very familiar with your community, and I know that it has a low crime incident rate. Blaming management is not the solution, but if you are truly concerned you should create a neighborhood watch. Many residents have been there a long time, and would love to get involved with some type of organization like that. We all need to remember this crime the next time we vote, and make sure we elect officials who are willing to get control of crime in Atlanta. If things don't change in the city this type of crime will only get worse. I am not a member of current management on site, but think very highly of the staff and residents of Wynfield Trace. I know together with management, you can find a solution that will help others in the future as well.

More than two weeks have passed. As expected, there was no notice of alert from the apartment management to the tenants about the crime occured, contrary to the place I stayed before. Except for my immediate neigbours, people are still under the illusion that this has never happened here.
During the past two weeks, I gathered more information and pieced together what happened. Hope this will help other people in preventing this happening to them.
It was a couple in their twenties (a black male and a white female). They pick the apartments at the backside of the apartment building, and then knock at the door. If somebody answers the door, they will say they are looking for somebody (a bogus name) and then go away. If after knocking a few times, they don't hear anybody talking, they will then break in. It is that simple.
There was a witness to my case. He saw the suspects exiting my building with my TV and drove away like crazy. He informed the rental office before 5PM, talked with them and asked them to check the doors in our building. Nobody from the rental office took it seriously. When my wife came back home at around 6pm, the door was wide open. There could be somebody else entering the apartment and took more stuff. She had to inform the rental office again for the burglary. Guess what, not a single rental management person showed up!
Among the advices I got from the neighbours, the most mentioned tip is: BUY YOURSELF A GUN! It looks like this is a must to live here!

wow, great neighbor, didn't even bother calling the police. don't blame management, crime happens everywhere. especially when you live in the back of an apartment complex.
