Safe and affordable

I've lived at Oak Park for a year and we're about to resign out lease for another. We toured several other apartments looking for something better, but for the prices, you simply can't beat Oak Park. The location is decent, but not excellent. It is very close to the East-West Connector, and right near I-285, which is in a good commuting distance to Midtown, Marietta (all the way to east cobb), Buckhead, and Kennesaw. It has fire and police right across the connector, and I see patrols (or at least police cars) regularly.

The pricing is fantastic. Floorplans leave only a little "bad" space where it's wasted (such as posts in the middle of the main room), but for the square footage, it's the best we've been able to find without going too ghetto. When we resign the lease, rent is only increasing a whopping $25, much better than my midtown apartment that increased 33% on me.

For singles, there isn't much to do, as it seems to be very family oriented. If you hate kids, don't even bother, as they make a lot of noise. I personally love it, and occasionally throw a ball to them or something. I've had several "wash me" reminders on my car. :) But in terms of community, there really isn't much. I see a family or two interacting with each other, but there are no community-wide events like you see at some other places. Which is fine for most singles, because Buckhead is a short trip away. They do have a laundry facility, pools, and grills/picnic tables. One major beef I have is not being able to have grills on the patio, but I also understand why. Keeps me from eating grilled food all the time, which is a shame.

Parking is plentiful, and even if the lot near your apartment is full, there is usually always parking in another section, with just a minute or so walk. Occasionally it'll get messed up with a big moving truck unloading, but I'd say 90% of the time you can get a space within a minute's walking distance to your apartment. Parking is outside with little lighting and no cover, so don't plan to bring your Bentley here unless you want to wash it every day.

Noise isn't a problem. The walls and celings shield a surprising amount of noise (surprising for an apartment). Occasionally I'll hear a dog bark, or a child scream/cry, or a car thumping bass, but it's much quieter than any other place I've lived. I think the most noise is when the neighbor turns the dishwasher on you can hear the water moving.

Maintenance is hit and miss. There are a few who really treat their work well, and a few who do just ok work. They'll come back out if they mess up though. They usually get to short work orders within a day, maybe two for ones that need materials or preparation.

The staff is courteous, but it's gone a little downhill. Used to be Robin there that made everything great, but now the staff is probably average. Don't get me wrong, they try their best to help, it's just without the shining personality it used to be. I think we only visited one other place where it was better than Oak Park (out of maybe 15-16 place).

The landscaping is decent, but once again you get what you pay for. They do a good job of maintaining grass and bushes, and plant the occasional flowers, but it's definitely not a butterfly garden. Perfect for allergic me, but I suppose you can always plant stuff in a box on your patio if that matters to you.

Safety is good, I never feel unsafe around there. There is usually someone outside at any time of day or night, but again we're outside a city in a low-ish budget neighborhood, so just don't be stupid about it and you'll be fine.

Overall, I recommend the place. It's not perfect by any means, but if your budget is low and you're more concerned with things like safety, speedy maintenance, and decent location rather than amenities and perks, give this place a look.
