High Rent - There are better options on SSI!

The staff and facilities at Island Retreat are alright, but the rent is incredibly inflated for the area. They advertised extensively and because I was moving from out-of-town, I was under the impression that they were my only option.
After I started meeting people I realized that friends were renting cute little 2 and 3 bedroom houses on St. Simons for the same (or less!) rent that I was paying for my 1 bedroom apartment. And worse, most of their rentals were in much more desirable locations (i.e. short walks to the beach and village). Many allowed pets, and quite a few didn?t require leases.
My best advice is to check with local realtors and, if possible, drive around a few neighborhoods. Many landlords place a sign in the window rather than an ad in the paper. If you?re relocating for a job, ask if anyone in your office has a lead. The best rentals in this area are often word-of-mouth.If you MUST rent from IR be sure to ask for the 6-month lease. It will cost you a little more per month, but you?ll be able to get out sooner.
