My sister in law came here on June 2nd to check them out. She liked what she saw, filled out the paperwork and paid the $145 application fee and picked out an apartment. She and my wife then left to come back to Ohio.
Monday she was told by the manager she will be working for about the fatal shooting of two teenage girls and the wounding of 8 other teens. Needless to say she rightfully decided not to move into the apartment community and found another one.
June 7th one of the leasing consultants called her to ask about missing paperwork. My sister in law who doesn't like talking on the phone asked me to call them. I did and told the leasing consultant she wouldn't be moving in. When asked why, I told her because of the fatal shooting, their apartment complex is not as safe as it was made out to be. She said she understood. I asked for the application fee back and was told it was non refundable.
I told her that under most ordinary circumstance I would agree. However, that due to the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting, they should return the application fee. Again I was told it was non refundable. I informed her that if it was not refunded, we would contact the Better Business Bureau, the Stockbridge Chamber of Commerce and a local newspaper. At that point she said she would talk with the manager about making an exception and she needed to talk with my sister in law. I gave them her cell phone number which they already had in the file and was told they would call her that day. They never called her.
I called them again on June 16th and spoke with the manager who again said there would be no refund. I informed her we would be following up on our statement about filing complaints with different organizations.
We filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau Sunday night. We are now waiting to find out what happens.
I would stay away from this place.

I agree. I recently advised the apartments of my intent to move in light of the unsafe conditions and shootings, not to mention apparent gang activity that they refuse to acknowledge and was stone walled the same way. I have been a resident for over a year and never been late on the rent but when I had to renew my lease and move to a smaller unit, the deal I got was worse than I had expected being a good tenant. I had no choice at the time to stay and reluctantly signed but then all this happened with the killings. They are now telling me I must give a 60 day notice plus pay 2 months early termination fee to get out of my lease. They are forcing me into a financial crisis of having to pay 4 months rent or continue to risk my safety and tht of my teenage daughter's that occasionally is supposed to stay with me. They did not respond at all when I gave my notice at the beginning of the month until I called them a week or so later to find out why. Then all they did was give me the same old pat answer regardless of whom I talked to or tried to contact in their corporate office. I still have not heard from them after repeated calls but I refuse to stay another night in that apartment because of thes unsafe conditions and the unconcerned attitude of the management personnel to make a customer happy and safe. They don't care about anything except getting their money and certainly not the residents. Anyone thinking of moving here should run, not walk somewhere else.

It's not the community's fault that there was a shooting there. It's unfortunate but that doesn't mean that everyone gets let out of their lease early. St. Ives hasn't been a nice community since right before the Connor Group took over, but even then it was going downhill. But look at the reasons why. It's affordable and honestly towards the lower end of the rent scale. That allows some undesirables the ability to move in. If you're willing to pay more for rent (and you qualify) there are many other communities in the Atlanta area that would better suit you with less noise and other complaints. If you want to live in Henry County in an apartment and you want to spend less on rent this is what you'll have to deal with, St. Ives or anywhere else.
What exactly is the complaint to the BBB about?

The complaint is about unethical business practices. When apartment management says the complex is safe, there shouldn't be 2 fatal shootings and the wounding of 8 other teenagers. When your apartment courtesy officer recommends the party not being allowed to happen, apartment management should listen. Especially when the courtesy officer is a police officer who lives in the complex. Connor Group properties just told the BBB that they still won't change their mind. That's why this is now being forwarded to the Attorney General's office. I am also going to contact as many business magazines as I can with a writeup about this. Connor Group is a very unethical property management company and it appears they hire people who don't know how to manage a complex. As far as my sister in law goes, she is now paying more and living in a gated community that scores much higher than St Ives. She feels and is safer there than St Ives.
