I am happy here

I'd like anyone considering Highclere to know that 3 months ago the rating for this complex was almost perfect. It's gone down since then because residents are upset about the former manager being let go. I won't go into the right or wrong of that decision as it's not relevant to this site. This site is here so people can make an informed decision about where to live. I would recommend Highclere and this is why:

When I moved in there were 4 minor maintenance items I wanted addressed. They were done the next day. A week later I noticed my oven wasn't fully heating. An email to the manager that night resulted in a brand new stove the next day. Another minor maintenance call a week after that was also addressed the next day.

The (new) manager has been extremely responsive to my needs and has shown me nothing but courtesy and respect.

My neighbors are polite and considerate. I never hear any noise through the walls (except for water when the guy next door showers) nor are there loud cars, loud people in the halls, etc.

The grounds are clean and well-maintained. The first floor flooding mentioned in another posting is a landscaping issue that is being addressed. It's unfair to blame the flooding on the new manager when it's been an issue for years!

There are no roaches (I lived in Florida so roaches are intolerable in my world!).
My apartment is clean and comfortable and I truly love coming home after a long day at work. I can sit on my deck, enjoy the cool breeze and watch the lights of Omaha spread out below me.

Parking is adequate.

Not everything is perfect. The bad side'

There's a railroad yard right across the street. It's loud and annoying and if I had heard the noise when I looked at the place I would have taken a unit on the back side of the building or further up the hill. It is seriously, seriously intrusive many times throughout the day. You can forget sleeping in on Saturdays because they fire up those engines at 7:00 and rev them until 9:30 at which time they toot their horns merrily at each other before chugging off down the rails. I now detest trains.

The interstate is close enough that it's a constant, low hum. I've gotten used to it and now don't even notice but at first it was intrusive. Again, a unit on the backside or further up the hill probably doesn't have to deal with that.

Also, I'm disappointed that the neighbors haven't been as neighborly as I'd heard they were. They haven't been rude, and they will say hi as long as you say hi first, but other than a few exceptions (who are moving) I really don't know my neighbors at all. I would like a stronger sense of community and a bit more friendliness rather than just a polite hello, but that's just me. Some people probably prefer to just nod and smile (like all my neighbors maybe!) =)

Although the old manager was great, the new manager is doing a great job by me thus far. I would like those considering Highclere to keep in mind negative reviews should be tempered with the knowledge that long-time residents are upset their beloved former manager was fired. If you're looking for a wonderful apartment in a pretty setting with beautiful views, I highly encourage you to come look.
